Hi!
I’m 16 and I personally love the New Testament and find it easy to follow. I’m trying to work my way through the old testament but it can be very draining, and (forgive me for saying this) boring at times. Should I focus more on the NT or OT? Thank you.

God Bless!

If you don’t read and understand the OT, you will never be able to fully understand the significance of the NT and God’s overall plan of redemption for all mankind. Why is Jesus called the “Lamb” of God? Why is Mary considered the New Ark of the Covenant? What’s the connection between Jesus and the Ark of the Covenant? What is the significance of Jesus being born into the tribe of Judah? What is the significance of St. John the Baptist being born into the tribe of the Levites? Why did Jesus specifically choose 12 disciples? Why not only 10? Why is The Blessed Virgin seen wearing a crown of 12 stars in Revelation?

Amazing points.

Good advice below or above. You may be a little young for the O.T. Certainly, some things there would not be suitable for you. Though, I think you could read some from the Psalms each day. You may not understand it all, but I don’t think anyone understands it all.:tiphat:

Do a Bible Timeline seminar such as The Great Adventure (best!), or Journey Through Scripture: Genesis to Jesus, or EWTN’s program Our Father’s Plan. Once you get the big picture, you see how things fit together better and it makes more sense. Life changing for me! I understand the Old Testament readings at Mass ever since.

Then, all your re-readings get more interesting and deeper.

Psalms are great.
Genesis, Exodus.
Wisdom literature: Proverbs, Wisdom of Solomon.
Once you know the history that is the backdrop, and the connections to the NT, the major prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel in particular because there are so many things Jesus fulfills.

But you do have to sift for the gold nuggets sometimes. Isaiah is a big book, but the Suffering Servant passages make me cry. It’s Jesus!

Jeremiah 31 the New Covenant: amazing promise, then Scripture is silent for seven centuries until Jesus institutes the eucharist: the cup of my blood, the NEW COVENANT!!!

Start looking for the connections in the Sunday Mass readings. Read ahead in the missal or at Today’s Mass Readings
that’s:

Start thinking: what is the connection between the OT and Gospel reading here? Sometimes the Psalm and NT Epistle are related too.

Like Sheep Sunday a few weeks ago; and we’re in the midst of the John 6 Bread of Life discourse that runs for the rest of the month.

The NT is hidden in the OT, and the OT is fully revealed in the NT. Look for the harmony.

But keep it up, because as you learn more, it gets richer and richer. 👍

I have to admit that the history and law stuff makes me yawn!

Thank you so much for your points. 🙂 I’m now on the book of Joshua…I’ve read the first five books already. God Bless you all!
