How is a novena prayed and are there specific prayers? I am trying to learn forgive me if this has been answered.

A novena is a prayer or series of prayers prayed over 9 days. (coming from the Latin for 9, novus-a-um). Novenas can be prayed to any number of saints or devotions. There are usually specific prayers entailed with novenas.

A novena is a series of 9 days or 9 weeks of prayer services, and there are different prayers for different novenas.
The “original” novena was the 9 days between the ascension and Pentecost Sunday.
Here in Pittsburgh, the St. Paul Monastery has an ongoing novena every Monday to the Passionist saints.
I don’t know if its still being held since the parish consolidation, but St. Elizabeth’s in the strip used to have a novena to John Neumann who was pastor there

Our Lady Undoer of Knots (gained popularity when Pope Francis said it was one his favorites)
Infant of Prague Novena

St Jude
The most important thing to remember, is Novenas, prayed devoutly, always bring spiritual benefits, and sometimes your favor granted. These prayers are not like a coupon or vending machine, they simply bring you closer to God and increase devotion, as we ask for mercy foremost. Sometimes the answer to our request is no, not because God doesn’t hear our prayers, but because He has something even better in mind for us or the time is not right. Gd always grants what is in our best interest. And this, sometimes we may not now at the time.
People often think they are not praying correctly, or that God doesn’t hear us. He does. We just need to trust Him in all things.

An exception was Mother Theresa’s “express novena”, where in time of urgent need she just prayed 9 Memorares in a row and then added a 10th one in thanksgiving to “Thank God Ahead of Time” (as Bl. Solanus Casey put it).

As all the others have answered. Also, contrary to the belief of some; it is not necessary to publish the Novena petition in order for a response. As a matter of fact; the Church discourages this; as it sends the message your prayers will not be answered if not published. This is not what the Church teaches. God answers are prayers in his time, not ours. It may not always be the answer you want, but it is the answer God wants for you. God bless.
