Just to give an idea of how original sin stains us, notice that people who are raised by abusive fathers often grow up to be in relationships with abusive men or as abusive men themselves. People who grow up in an alcoholic home often end up as alcoholics themselves. People exposed to sexual perversion often have a strange view of sex, or problems trusting others.

We learn our connectivity to Jesus, to the Holy Spirit and to God the Father. We see this world and instinctively we know that it was made by Someone for our benefit.
God is near, if that is what we wish for Him to be. We have to have that free will choice to seek Jesus and to “become a temple for the Holy Spirit”.

Original Sin is the Result of Man using his free will and choosing to turn away from God.
From the Catechism:
Man let let his trust in his Creator die in his heart and, abusing his freedom, disobeyed God’s command. In that sin man preferred himself to God and by that very act scorned him. He chose himself over and against God. in this act Adam and Eve immediately lost the grace of original holiness.
They became afraid of the God of whom they had conceived a distorted image - that of a God jealous of his prerogatives. The control of the soul’s spiritual faculties over the body was shattered; the union of man and woman became subject to tensions, their relations henceforth marked by lust and domination. Harmony with creation was broken: visible creation has become alien and hostile to man.
Because of man, creation is now subject “to its bondage to decay”. Finally, the consequence explicitly foretold for this disobedience will come true: man will “return to the ground”, for out of it he was taken. Death makes its entrance into human history. (Cf. catechism Para 385 ff.)

As Dakota Roberts said above, the answer is concupiscence.How does original sin stain us, in what ways does it hamper our salvation?
We have a nature, as humans, to search after what makes us happy. Even if it isn’t pleasurable! By our inherited original sin, our nature is smudged. We still seek things that make us happy, but we are often willingly led astray. God tells us that he is all that is good and joyful. When we leave him by grievously sinning, God does not stop us. It’s his way of saying, “If you think that is what will make you happy, then do as you will. However, you cannot have both me and your idols. Those idols are outside my light” When you enter into a dark room, the light has not left you, rather you have left the light.
