How is it Judaism survived the destruction of the Temple?

The Sadducees were not an authentic religious movement. They were a cult of convenience based on political power. The masses, as Josephus attests to, were with the Pharisee rabbis, and today’s religious (“Rabbinite”) Jews are their descendants. Incidentally, there were many groups of Pharisees, and one need not conclude that our “Chazal” (Sages of Blessed Memory) were the same ones maligned in the New Testament.

Judaism without sacrifices means Judaism without atonement.
This statement comes from a fundamental ignorance of the mechanisms clearly spelled out in the Torah, which lay out ritual sacrifice as an atonement for unintentional sins only. According to your reading, there never was an atonement for intentional sins, which is incoherent. Intentional sins could only be atoned for by an abandonment of sinful ways and penitence before God. Sacrifices for them were never valid.
All the more so, then, for unintentional sins. God graced us with the institution of animal sacrifice to more easily and tangibly expiate our unintentional sins, but the pathways of repentance were never closed even in those times. Now that the Temple has been destroyed, that atonement comes from our studying the laws of the sacrifices and repentance before God, as it always did.

Yes, I’ve made this point several times, and it is spelled out rather clearly in the Torah, with one exception IIRC. Blood sacrifice of animals is actually the LEAST effective of the methods of atonement, even for unintentional sins, as well as being of little use if not founded on sincere repentance.

Happy Purim, Moses613!

THANK you for this insight. I didn’t know this and is something for me to ponder on.

Thanks to you, too, Meltzerboy. I appreciate both you and Moses speaking up.

I learn so much from our Jewish members of the board. Important information I believe we Christians need to know and understand.

Dude, this thread is a perfect example of why (IMO) you need to do an Ask Me Anything : Jewish edition thread…
