There’s a lot of good info on this in the early parts of St. Thomas Aquinas’ Summa Theologica. It doesn’t answer every little detail, but he does give a good framework of how to understand the relationship, nature, and origins of the Persons of the Trinity.

I suppose one of the Christian justifications for this is that G-d is omnipotent and can do whatever He wishes, except evil and anything else that might be contrary to the very nature and essence of G-d. Of course, none of us can totally fathom G-d’s essence although we are given clues in Scripture and Tradition. G-d’s transformation to human form, more correctly called Incarnation, would thus reveal His ultimate love for humanity and would not at all be contrary to His nature. Needless to say, Judaism and Islam have different perspectives.

Actually, to appeal to the Omnipotence of God would be more proper of a Protestant. We (I am a protestant inside) are those who prefer to explain phenomenons flatly. Catholics have an ethos more associated to lines (explanatory lines, social lines). Among the explanatory lines of the Sonship, as Meltzerboy have said, one of the most important are that related to the Socialness that the person of the Son establishes with the Humankind. However, it explains one of the fonctions of the Son, but I don’t think that it is His raison d’etre.

Please consider the following concepts:

1. Prior to creation, God experienced an unbreakable peace and perfect happiness because He was perfectly patient and kind. However, He wanted to experience a limitless happiness. In order to experience a limitless happiness without sacrificing any moment of peace, one needs three things:
   a. As long as God continues to know everything, the greatest level of happiness He can experience is a perfect happiness, therefore He needed to sacrifice knowing everything in order to truly grant others free-will in Heaven.
   b. He needs a free-willed companion who would subject himself to the same perfections of patience, kindness, and motivations.
   c. Since He knew His Kingdom of Heaven had to be of absolute free will, He also had to ensure that those accepted into Heaven would eternally follow according to perfect patience and kindness. In order to ensure this, He had to continue to know everything as to know the depths of every person’s intentions and to judge them accordingly.
   Therefore…
   The All-Knowing one is the Father.
   The Son is the one who sacrificed the state of All-Power, All-Knowledge, Unbreakable Peace, Perfect Happiness, and Unstoppable Energy, in order to share the experience of limitless happiness with others. His first objective though was to demonstrate to His free-willed creations the incredible depths of patience, kindness, and motivation True Love has, which He does by becoming Human.
   Since God, being perfect and all-knowing, wanted to ensure His plan to bring free-willed beings to Love as He Loves would work, the first free-willed creation to eternally perfect living in oneness with the Greatest Commandments, is referred to as the Holy Spirit, because his spirit becomes eternally at one with the Holy Spirit of God, and therefore can be recognized as the Spirit of God.

Since my last post focused on answering the “why” of that question more so than the “how,” please consider the following concept to “How can God have a human son?”

In order to envision this, one must ponder what was the first substance to come into existence, please note: prior to this, there was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God, therefore God is initially bodiless.
There are only two options, either the first substance was living or non-living. If the first substance was non-living, then all following substances until the point of the first life would have been non-living, which would have rendered it impossible for the creation of a Heaven.
Therefore, we must believe the first substance was living, and it was this first substance that could think, feel, and will. And it was this substance that all things were created through. Since this substance could think, feel, and will, it can be considered a full person.
To conceptualize what this person looked like, consider the very beginning of a human: We, both male and female, are a single cell. Since we are created in the image and likeness of God, this could be exactly what the body of God looked like before creation. Which would also be why the Eucharist has the exact shape of a single cell!
So prior to creation God somehow came to exist as a single cell. And it was during the planning of how to bring free-willed beings to Love as He Loves, that He knew He had to directly show the free-willed beings the depths of patience and kindness in True Love, even in the face of unjust cruelty, that the cell duplicated. Therefore it can said, the second cell is the only begotten Son of the Father, who has the exact body of the Father, therefore is one in being with the Father, and through Him all things were made, and yet He was not made. Which I hope will also shed some light on the incredible depths of His Words, “This is my body, which will be given up for you.” He is saying, “I will give up knowing everything and having all power to do as I please, so that you may experience the blessings of unbreakable peace, limitless happiness, and unstoppable energy.” Please keep in mind, the All-knowing and All-powerful Father continues to exist, but when the Son was one in being, He had to give up that state to proceed with creation.

The nitty gritty…

Everything that we can say about God has to be infinity.
God’s power, providence and creativity are attributed to the Father.

God’s knowledge by which is creates is attributed in the Person of the Son but the knowledge is said to be the Father’s. Is is a doctrine of the Church that the Son proceeds from the Father.

The love of the Father and Son for each other is attributed to the Person of the Holy Spirit. It is a doctrine of the Church that the Holy Spirite proceeds from the Father and Son.

The three Persons of the Holy Trinity are distinguished from each other only by relationship, not substance. Each is fully God.

God, in the Person of the Son took up to himself a human nature, the man, body and soul, called Jesus. Jesus was like us in everything except personhood. He was a divine Person, not a human person. Nevertheless, Jesus in his human soul felt everything we do.

That’s a good starting point.

I believe that the heavenly ovum in the womb of Mary was impregnated with life by the Holy Spirit independently from a human father. God simply supplied the spark of life into the heavenly ovum that made it possible for the cells to begin dividing and multiplying into additional cells until it was time for Blessed Mary to give birth nine months later to the Son of God. God, therefore, is the Father of the humanity of Jesus. In the “Son of God” title of Jesus, the deity of Jesus is not necessarily the issue here, since the divinity of Jesus did not need a Father; rather, Jesus is the Son of God because God is simply the Father of Jesus’ human nature.
