How is the brown scapular blessed and is there an alternative way to wear it?

Hello,

I have yet more questions to ask;

I have just learnt about the brown scapular and am really interested in wearing it. I read that you have to have it blessed first. Would this be as simple as taking it to confession and asking the priest to do a quick blessing?

Also, are there alternatives? For example, how would it be worn when wearing a dress, or or a tank top?

The blessing should follow this formula. You can just take the scapular to a priest sometime and have him perform the ceremony. It’s short and quck, so it shouldn’t be too difficult.

As for alternative ways of wearing it, I’m not sure that there are any. As far as I know, you’re supposed to always wear it around your neck. This really shouldn’t be too difficult no matter what you wear.

The same way you would wear it otherwise. It is okay if it is showing.

Many times I have spotted scapulars around people’s necks when they have a shirt that is more open around the neck (i.e. a tank top). This is okay.
 
I have another question to ask:

I read about miracles related to the brown scapular and that this atheist wore it when requested to by a friend and recisted the Hail Mary every day. He then converted to the Church.

I was talking to my Muslim friend about the Marian apparitions (ones which wouldn’t conflict with his faith) and told him about the brown scapular, its promise and miracles. He said he would wear it if it made me happy and I asked him if he would say the Hail Mary every day after his usual prayers. He said he might do.

However, ‘Holy Mary, mother of God’ would conflict with his belief, so could I tell him the Hail Mary, but skip it to ‘Holy Mary, pray for us sinners’? I believe in the promise and miracles of the brown scapular and that if my friend was genuinely devoted to Mary, Christ would save him out of her love for him and his commitment to her.
 
Here’s a Formula that doesn’t have thee’s and thou’s so it sounds more like normal speech.
Scapular Ritual for Priests

Blessing and clothing with the Scapular of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt Carmel enrolls the individual in the Scapular Confraternity, a very large prayer organisation. Scapular wearers share in the daily prayers of the Carmelite Order and the worldwide good works of the members of the Scapular Confraternity.

THE SHORT FORMULA OF BLESSING AND ENROLMENT

(+) makes sign of the cross in blessing

Priest : Show, O Lord, Your mercy
All : And grant us your salvation
Priest : O Lord, hear my prayer
All : And let my cry come unto You
Priest : The Lord be with you
All : And with your spirit

Priest : Let us pray

All : O Lord Jesus Christ, Saviour of mankind, by your right hand sanctify (+) this Scapular which your servant, (Name), will devoutly wear for the love of You and of Your Mother, the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel; so that by her intercession, he may be protected from the wickedness of the enemy and may persevere in Your grace until death, Who lives and reigns forever and ever.

The priest now sprinkles the Scapular with Holy Water, after which he places it on the person, saying:

Priest : Receive this blessed Scapular and ask the Most Holy Virgin that, by her merits, it may be worn with no stain of sin and may protect you from all harm and bring you into everlasting life.
All : Amen

Priest : By the power granted to me, I admit you to a share in all the spiritual works performed, with the merciful help of Jesus Christ, by the Religious of Mount Carmel, in the Name (+) of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
All : Amen

Priest : May Almighty God, Creator of Heaven and earth, bless (+) (Name), whom He has been pleased to receive into the Confraternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. We beg her to crush the head of the ancient serpent in the hour of his death, and, in the end, to obtain for him a palm and the crown of Your everlasting inheritance.
Through Christ Our Lord
All : Amen

The priest now sprinkles the one enrolled with Holy Water.
 
I’d like to ask the same question again and hopefully get more replies that the OP.

Are there alternative ways to wear the brown scapular when wearing around the neck is not possible or convenient?
 
the only alternative is the scapular medal i believe, and it must be around your neck even for surgeries or medical procedures or in dangerous situations like my advice would be dont take it off and wear it even if swimming. my scapular saved my life a year ago so im a firm believer in marys scapular promise

In 1910, Pope St. Pius X introduced a scapular medal which may be substituted in most cases for any of the various scapulars. Valid enrollment in the scapulars must, however, be made before the substitution.
