How is the excommunication lifted from having had an abortion?

Hi,

I recently heard that after confessing an abortion, a Catholic woman (or man) would have to have the excommunication lifted. Is it automatically lifted with Confession or does that person have to go through a specific process? God Bless, lleehh
 
Hi,

In the U.S. the bishops have given priests permission to lift the excommunication when they give absolution for the sin of abortion. So all one needs to do is go to Confession.
