How is the GIRM used?

I own a copy of the GIRM and have had it for several years.

It’s not a book that I look at every day, or every week. It may be months before I try to look up something.

But it’s confusing for me, since I don’t use it much, and I usually only delve into it when I’m looking for the answer to a question.

How is it set up? It’s not like a dictionary, or a thesaurus… so what’s the deal?

I see that there are divisions for masses with a Deacon, and those without, but what … where do I… it’s confusing:whacky:

It’s also hard to ask how to use it if it’s not one of those times I’m trying to use it.

I would rather not post the questions I was trying to find: people would just answer the question, but now how it is found

Any help out there? 🤷

Hmm… think of the part of the liturgy in question and then the form of the liturgy. Better to ask in the liturgy forum since, the GIRM applies more to the 1970 Missal than the 1962.

Basically, the GIRM provides a description of what is supposed to happen during the Mass. So if you have a question about a particular part of the Mass you will either look in the opening general statements (these tell more like “this part of the Mass is meant to: praise God, instruct, etc.”) or you look into the second part with the different kinds of Mass and look for the specific moment you have a question about.

Well, I can’t know for certain, since I don’t know how to use it.

Wouldn’t more people use it if they knew HOW?
  1. For the most part, “people” aren’t supposed to use it. It is a direction to the priest in saying the Mass.
Lay people would “use” the GIRM to see if a particular Mass was being said correctly. This is very helpful when something just “seems wrong”. Luckily, most of the time, it is a matter of permitted variation rather than “wrong”.

Are you trying to use a copy of the GIRM that does not have the actual Missal referenced? The two go together. The GIRM doesn 't really make any sense without the Missal. I have only referenced the copy on the USCCB website and it is very user friendly. If you go to the relevant part of Mass, it states what is supposed to happen.
