Isn’t falling in love supposed to make you feel invincible?
I feel the most vulnerable I have in my life!
It’s one o’clock in the morning here, and I can’t sleep. I had the urge, as I often do, to take a walk in the park, where it’s cool and peaceful at night. Then I thought to myself that my boyfriend would be horrified to think that I was walking alone in a secluded area at night, and changed my mind. It just kind of struck me tonight that I never used to care about stuff like that. When I was younger, I used to just go ahead and do the dangerous thing on my mind (hitchhiking, playing with matches and aerosol spray cans) and figure that the people who’d worry about me wouldn’t have to hear about it, and what they don’t know can’t hurt them.
This time, I don’t want to do it even though my boyfriend lives thousands of miles away and need never know. Am I maturing or just getting old?
I don’t know. Now I’m in a stable relationship leading to marriage, I feel very secure in the relationship, and yet different about myself. The thought that I could become a mother as early as next year has made me much more self-reflective. I question my decisions more - would this reflect well on me as a wife and mother if I were still doing this next year? I used to laugh about my messy apartment - now I’m embarrassed (but still messy
). I used to have four or five drinks when out with friends - now I limit myself to one or two, because I don’t want to feel out of control. I used to blow the last hundred dollars or so of the budget if I had leftovers at the end of the month - now I just leave it in the bank account for a rainy day.
I can’t help feeling like I’ve lost a bit of the fun part of myself. I mean, I still go out and have fun with friends. I went shopping with a friend last weekend, met some friends for lunch this weekend, and will spend the weekend catching up with old friends next week. It’s not that I’ve totally changed my personality. It’s just that I kind of liked that girl who made reckless decisions. The girl who did dangerous things without worrying, because everybody dies sometime. The girl who responded to a comment that “pretty girls shouldn’t go out alone at night” by shaving her head so the rule wouldn’t apply. I like the new me, too; don’t get me wrong. This nice, responsible, helpful girl I’ve become is really nice to be around - but I miss the shock value of being the girl with green hair who races the city bus down the street on her bicycle.
How do you feel about the changes to your personality over the course of your life? Do you miss aspects of your younger self? Do you like the person you’ve become?
