How long does extreme unction last?

My uncle Tedddy (age 92) is in a local hospital and yesterday had the sacrament of the sick (extreme unction) along with confession and communion. He has pneumonia. If his condition lasts for many days should I have it re-done. He could come home and go back. He could be in the hospital a month or more. He could even be sent to a nursing home. I’m not sure this sacrament will last. This sacrament is confusing to me with him in trouble and it’s my fault if I don’t do this right or often enough. I don’t want to feel I let him down if he doesn’t get it again. Will any of yesterday’s sacrament count if he dies next month.

Hi Mike,

Usually one is anointed once for a particular illness. If the illness takes a turn for the worse, or the person needs surgery, the person can be anointed again. When I was a pastor, we usually anointed the elderly every four months.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things. So relax.
