is it 1 hour? 2 hour? or 3 hour?

the first one I was ever at lasted 2 hours and it was GREAT 😃 if only it had of been longer 😃

but because I am unaccustomed to how long it should last I thought I’d ask you guys.

Also have you ever been to an Eastern Rite Mass that was too short and been disgusted with the fact that it was too short? and if it was too short for you, how short was it?

My Orthodox brethren are more than welcome and ALWAYS welcome to comment and discuss how long or short their liturgy is or should be.

It should last for eternity. The Divine Liturgy does not end when we exit the church building.

That was a very wise and prudent answer Ignatius thank you for your response to the thread. 🙂

When I used to go a Russian Orthodox Monastery on Sunday Mornings the service could easily go on for four hours. This was the morning office plus the Divine Liturgy. 👍

From the byzantine side: Matins could start as early as 3:00-3:30am, be done in candle light, and just at the end of Matins and the beginning of the DL, the moring sun is peeking through the windows. 😃

It is rare to find this now.

The normal expressions of the mortal participation in the Divine Liturgy on sundays runs anywhere from a 1 hour ordinary Sunday DL of St. John through a 5 hour Easter Sunday DL.

Matins 30 minutes to 90 minutes.
3rd hour 20 minutes to 40 minutes.

Add an akathist after (10-60 minutes, depending upon singing speed and which one)…

Oh, and all of these may be stacked up into one big service package.

St Nicholas, the Sunday DL runs typically 65 minutes lately; under Rev. Fr. Mike it ran 75, as it did under Rev. Frs Wes and Steven. Monsignor Michael, of eternal memory, it was 60. And the whole lot of them take the same options except Fr. James…

Fr James speaks the Anaphora except the words of institution and last lines before responses, eliminated the children gathering close to the proclaimer of the Gospel for the proclimation of the Gospel, and has said that the line for communion needs to be forming from the moment he sings “Approach with the fear of God…”

If you come for Matins and DL, at my parish the total time is between three to three and a half hours. If it’s a special day with additional services tacked on, like Pentecost Sunday coming up soon, then it will go for more like four hours.

However, most people show up after the liturgy has started and are there for about an hour and a half. Perhaps ten to fifteen people show up for Matins, which is a shame, because that’s where all of the prayers change substantially and you learn everything about the saints of the day. Since I have a five month old son, these days I am lucky just to make it to liturgy on time. I really do miss those other services.

I once knew someone who was quite the ladies man. He tried desperately to get a date with one woman. She finally agreed, but said they had to go to church first. As a Christmas and Easter Catholic he figured half an hour or maybe an hour and they had the evening ahead. He had never heard of Eastern Churches. I don’t know what liturgy they went to, but three hours or so later he took her home and gave up on the evening. 😃

As the pastor at my church (a Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic church) would say, the Divine Liturgy should last as long as it takes to complete it. Since we are in Heaven during the Divine Liturgy, time stops. Hence, the Divine Liturgy is timeless. When you really get into the Liturgy, it almost does seem to have a timeless quality to it.

But at our church, it typically lasts an average of about 1:15 on most Sundays, depending on several factors.
