How long should we pray for someone in purgatory?

after a person dies , how long should you pray for them to get them out of purgatory

Pray for as long as you remember - don’t start thinking “Oh no! What if I don’t pray for them!”. You needn’t pray 24/7 for them until the day you die. God acknowledges your prayers and your sacrifice. Nothing is wasted. Be at peace - this person in purgatory is near to experiencing the beatific vision. What infinite bliss must await them!
 
Totally curious, but how do you know that arein purgatory, or are you just assuming?

I find myself doing the same thing with a few people I know.I don’t pray for them every day like I did when they first passed, but I seem to remember them on special days, like their Birthday, All Souls Day, Christmas, etc.
 
As I understand it, no prayer is ever wasted. If they are not in purgatory, prayers for them can benefit another member of the body of Christ who is in purgatory. Perhaps another relative or friend, etc. of yours who is in purgatory would be gifted with the benefits of this prayer. I believe that we should try to keep praying for those in purgatory (whoever they may be).
 
Offer them prayers as long as you remember. If you feel like that is insufficient, just remember to offer prayers for “all holy souls in purgatory.” That way, anyone you forget is covered.
 
Perhaps St. Gertrude’s prayer would be good,
a couple of times a day?

Eternal Father,
I offer thee the most precious Blood
of Thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said throughout the world today,
for ALL the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the Universal Church,
for those in my own home,
and within my family.
Amen.

I don’t know if that’s true, but the numbers aren’t that surprising. Think of all the protestants, NO ONE IS PRAYING FOR THEM, they don’t believe in Purgatory or that anything can help once someone has passed. Think of all the Buddhists and Hindu and all the people who lived before the Incarnation, good people who never receive the Word, billions of people.

I believe we have a huge responsibility to be praying for all of these people. Let’s say the prayer actually releases 1000 souls. If you say it 1000 times, you will release a million souls. 1000 million is a billion. It is estimated that over 100 billion people have lived on earth. So we say that prayer 100 million times, we might get them all out.

I may not have time to post, anymore!😃

The majority of people who have lived and died are in hell. Or to say it another way, if you prefer this formulation, the most probable eternal destiny for the vast majority of people is hell.

Most deceased protestants are in hell. Almost all, in fact. The reason for this is that they don’t have the sacrament of penance.

I know this is probably becoming tiresome for some readers, but those buddhists and hindus are all in hell. Original sin alone suffices for that but they all commit actual mortal sins as well.

Still, let us pray for the poor souls in purgatory. Many are there and few are praying for them.

As an aside, though I suppose somewhat on topic, A young visiting priest at my parish last Sunday announced during his sermon that only Catholics can be saved. He then repeated himself on this point during a Q/A in the parish hall. Things are looking up in the Church!

Last thought: before the bleats of “not fair!” start: At the general judgement, every single person who has ever lived, or who will ever live, will witness the judgement of every other person, so that all will understand that God is perfectly just. Those condemned to hell (the majority) will freely admit that God is perfectly just and that they deserve hell. Those blessed who enter the joys of Heaven will be in perfect agreement and will feel no sense of injustice over those of their acquaintances who are condemned to an eternity of suffering in hell. In fact they will love God all the more, were it possible, for the perfection of His justice. This is why it is possible to have perfect bliss in Heaven despite the knowledge of the sufferings of the damned.
