It takes me anywhere from 20-25 minutes to pray the Rosary, usually closer to 20! It is interesting to see the amount of time it takes for different people. We all have our own ways of praying!

When I actually find the time and am not too exhausted to pray it, it usually takes me 20-30 minutes. But mostly I just say ten Hail Mary’s and an Our Father as part of my daily devotions, and stop there.

(Given to St. Dominic and Blessed Alan de la Roche)
1Whoever shall faithfully serve me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall receive powerful graces.
2.I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.
3.The Rosary shall be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, decrease sin, and defeat heresies
4.It will cause virtue and good works to flourish; it will obtain for souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of people from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them to the desire of eternal things. Oh, that souls would sanctify themselves by this means.
5.The soul which recommends itself to me by the recitation of the Rosary, shall not perish.
6.Whoever shall recite the Rosary devoutly, applying Himself to the consideration of its Sacred Mysteries shall never be conquered by misfortune. God will not chastise Him in His justice, he shall not perish by an unprovided death; if he be just, he shall remain in the grace of God, and become worthy of eternal life.
7.Whoever shall have a true devotion for the Rosary shall not die without the Sacraments of the Church.
8.Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary shall have during their life and at their death the light of God and the plentitude of His graces; at the moment of death they shall participate in the merits of the Saints in Paradise.
9.I shall deliver from purgatory those who have been devoted to the Rosary.
10.The faithful children of the Rosary shall merit a high degree of glory in Heaven.
11.You shall obtain all you ask of me by the recitation of the Rosary.
12.All those who propagate the Holy Rosary shall be aided by me in their necessities.
13.I have obtained from my Divine Son that all the advocates of the Rosary shall have for intercessors the entire celestial court during their life and at the hour of death
14.All who recite the Rosary are my children, and brothers and sisters of my only Son, Jesus Christ.
15.Devotion of my Rosary is a great sign of predestination.

from Enchiridion indulgentiarum Recitation of the Marian Rosary (Rosarii marialis recitatio)

An indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, a remission, which one of the faithful, properly disposed and under certain definite conditions, can acquire through the Church, which authoritatively dispenses, applying the treasure of the satisfactions of Christ and the Saints.
An indulgence is either PLENARY or PARTIAL, depending upon whether it frees one from the whole or from a part of the temporal punishment due to sin.
This means that one of the faithful who, with at least a contrite heart, performs a work enriched with a partial indulgence, is granted by the power of the Church that same amount of remission of temporal punishment as he has already obtained by the work itself. In other words, the remission is doubled, and that as often as the work prescribed is performed. A plenary indulgence means a full remission of temporal punishment, provided that several other conditions apply, in addition to the work performed or prayer said.

A plenary indulgence is granted, if the Rosary is recited in a church or public oratory or in a family group, a religious Community or pious Association; a partial indulgence is granted in other circumstances.
  • “Now the Rosary is a certain formula of prayer, which is made up of fifteen decades of “Hail Marys” with an “Our Father” before each decade, and in which the recitation of each decade is accompanied by pious meditation on a particular mystery of our Redemption.” (Roman Breviary) The name “Rosary,” however, is commonly used in reference to only a third part of the fifteen decades. The gaining of the plenary indulgence is regulated by the following norms:
    1. The recitation of a third part only of the Rosary suffices; but the five decades must be recited continuously.
    1. The vocal recitation must be accompanied by pious meditation on the mysteries.
    1. In public recitation the mysteries must be announced in the manner customary in the place; for private recitation, however, it suffices if the vocal recitation is accompanied by meditation on the mysteries.

25-35 minutes. I usually spend a bit of time introducing each mystery before I say the Our father and start the Hail Mary prayers. I’m not great at meditating while saying the prayers, so it helps to have a good set up.

It usually takes me about half an hour. I think the fastest I’ve ever finished a rosary is about 20 minutes.

Thanks for the reply’s!

Weirdly enough, I prayed the rosary the other day and it only took about 20 minutes…🤔 not sure whats going on lol

It takes me about five minutes to recite the opening prayers and my intentions, then 15 to recite the mysteries and conclude.

It takes me about 30 minutes. There is no specific amount of time. It’s different for each person.

In short… I would estimate somewhere between 25-35 minutes is optimal for the basic Rosary for most people accounting for distractions etc. even for someone who’s a bit quick praying The Rosary, these should be a minimum of 20 minutes as faster than 20 minutes one is simply going too fast in my opinion.

a bit longer answer for those who care…

while I hear some claim it only takes 15 minutes… in my opinion, 15 minutes is simply way too fast (and I am not one to move/talk slowly in general) as it takes me about 10-15 minutes just to pray The Chaplet of Divine Mercy which is definitely faster than praying The Rosary simply because it’s much less words.

so in my opinion I would say as a general rule a Rosary should take 20min+ at the bare minimum. but probably more in the 25-35 minute range for most people I suspect as one can only go so fast without things turning into one of those ‘going through the motions’ sort of things just to get it over with, which is not a good thing.

but with that said… I realize there is no specific time requirement, as it will vary a bit from person to person, but at the same time one can only go so fast before it’s too fast and they are just rattling off the words to get it over with. it’s better to take ones time a bit then just rush through it to get it over with. but being humans are humans, I think we all might go-through-the-motions from time-to-time.

for me personally, while I do pray additional prayers in addition to the standard Rosary, which will add a bit of time, I am typically between 40-50 minutes (this is pretty consistent since I have been doing this daily for over 5 years now) even though I am sure some of that is from distractions etc. but I suspect even if distractions were minimal it’s still going to be around 30minutes on the low side of things but probably more in the 35-40min area or so.

p.s. I would not be surprised if some people try to make that 15 minute claim just to get people to do it even though they know it takes longer. because if you told a common person that it takes around 30 minutes they might be less likely to start in the first place.

EDIT: earlier today it took me a little under 35min to finish The Rosary as I was a bit less distracted then usual and held a slightly more brisk pace.

My wife and I say our rosary, with litany, and prayers for holy Father and souls in purgatory in 15-20 minutes. We don’t rush, just steady pace.

It entirely depends on how focused you are on the mysteries, if there are distractions, if you are sleepy, if you speak quickly, how focused you are on the prayers, if you lose count or anything, etc. If you also read Scripture relating to the Rosary it will take longer.

Thanks, I usually offer my rosary for someone, Ill use that in the future! Do you think I could use it for any person, even if they weren’t Catholic and didn’t believe in God?

I probably take about 10-15 minutes… but I’m often holding my young son (trying to get him to sleep) as I pray it.
I also can pray Vespers in under 10 minutes… but that’s because someone is screaming before I get to the closing prayer.
Personal circumstances are a big factor…

Here at CAF I read about saintly families with 10+ kids where the parents still manage to get to daily Mass and spend 5 hours in contemplative prayer. I truly venerate such people. I’m far far far from making that a reality as a busy parent / professional.

It takes me about 15 Minutes. But take as long as you need. It’s about quality time, not how much time.

It takes as long as it takes. It’s prayer. Let God be in control of that. It’s more powerful to pray a single Hail Mary devoutly than rush through to finish an entire rosary and barely notice what you’ve said or meditated on.
