The Catholic leader thread got me wondering. According to the Church there are about 2 billion Catholics but when you subtract CINO, how many Catholics do you think there are really? Personally, I’m one of those people that if someone tells me they are Catholic, I just tend to accept it but I think many of you have different criteria.

So what do you all think?

I think that the number of Catholics is 1.2 billion. I can’t make a statement on how many true Catholics there are because I can’t claim to be worthy to make that statement.

our ecclesiology really does not allow us to subtract the cino, does it?

I agree but then I see statements that many Catholic leaders are not “really” Catholic and I’m just wondering how people make that assessment. Are all Catholics who aren’t pro-life not really Catholic or are they just disobedient Catholics?

I’ve also seen people here say that they wish all the liberal Catholics would just leave and I was thinking that if everyone who was pro-contraception left, it would be a very small church. I’m not saying I agree or disagree with any viewpoint, I’m just trying to get a feel for what makes one a “real” Catholic. I always just assumed if one was baptized, went to Mass and declared themselves Catholic, they were indeed Catholic.

Being new to Catholicism, I just get confused by some of the different statements that I’ve seen on the subject.

What is CINO?
Catholics in Name Only or cultural Catholics. People who were baptized Catholic and claim to be Catholic but don’t necessarily abide by the teachings of the Church. I would say most of my friends that are Catholic would probably fall into this category and I still consider them Catholic but I think maybe I’m a bit more liberal than most on this forum.

Here is another dumb question. Is someone like my dad who was baptized and confirmed Catholic but left the Church still considered Catholic by the Churches criteria?

If a Catholic doesn’t believe what the Catholic Church teaches in matters of doctrine then he isn’t in “union” with the Catholic Church and possibly Latae sententiae [self-excommunicated] which means they aren’t in union with the Church.

Thank you! Do you think that the majority of Catholics are self-excommunicated then? I wonder why so many continue in the Church instead of becoming say Episcopalian or Lutheran?

I would say yes I do. I don’t know why they don’t leave the Church, but I think it would be better if they just stuck with Her and started listening to Her for their own good. 👍

Total Christians in the world number around 2 billion of which 1.2 billion are Catholic.

I heard there were 1 billion Catholics but when I and the other three in RCIA got confirmed, it was 103 billion! 😛

You mean 103 million?

I think she might have meant 1.03 billion.
Or she might have huge powers of persuasion . . . wouldn’t it be something if one day we woke up and there were 103 billion people in the world - all of which were Catholic. :dancing:

Haha! Yes, that would surely be something. It would be quite nice actually. 😃

As long as they don’t all move to the midwest. 😉

Why do you say that?
The best thing about the midwest is that it is sparcely populated. I love raising my kids here. It wouldn’t be the same with an extra 103 billion people. 😛
