How many Catholics think this way?

I have a question for you: Why did the Pope not stop them?

Surely, Ferdinand and Isabella, as devout and committed they were as Catholics, would have obeyed the Pope, would they not?
maybe or maybe not, but the thing is that you hate the RCC because in your eyes the Pope didn’t stop them but you don’t hate the Spaniards yet it was the Monarchy who started the Inquisition it was not the Church.

I do not hate the RCC. Most of the time (except when I’m on here, for example), it is irrelevant to my life.

I have nothing but contempt for ANYONE, Spanish or otherwise, who would impose by force their beliefs onto others. That includes SOME Muslims, SOME Catholics, SOME historical Spaniards.

Well, there were plenty of Protestants and Anglicans doing slaughtering also, and besides, the Spanish Inquisition had the most humane ways of dealing with people than any other judicial structure of that time period. Get your facts straight please.
My emphasis.

It amazes me how folk are conspicously silent about the mis-givings of their own respective position. 😦

There were fewer people killed by the Spanish Inquisition in 500-years than Catholics Cromwell killed in the name of Protestantism in any single week in Ireland.

It amazes me how one side forgets this. So I think Protestantism also has things it wants to live down.

Also, the Catholic Inquisitions were so terrible that in criminal courts, accused often blasphemed in order to get the case transfered from criminal to Inquistional court as they knew they would receive a much fairer hearing and if found guilty, a much lesser sentence.

The criminal court sentence of death was often commuted by religious courts to imprisonment and sometimes even less than that.

That suggests to me that there is little the Catholic Church needs to live down.

On the net and, books and anecdotal sources, stories abound about the hundreds killed by the Spanish Inquisition. Nowwhere have I ever read about the tens of thousands of Catholics killed by Cromwell. Very convenient that eh!

Blessings and peace

If it had happened to your family, maybe you’d get “animated” too. Isn’t that like asking why European Jews “get so animated” over what the Nazis did to them?

And if the Spanish Inquisition “might not” have happened, why did Pope John Paul 2 apologize for it in 2000 publicly, on behalf of the whole Catholic religion?

Why did he also go to Israel, to the Western Wall, and put a paper containing a prayer asking for forgiveness for it as well?

Comparing the inquisition with the Holocaust not only minimizes the Holocaust but shows the profound ignorance of the Inquisition as well.

I am amazed at how difficult it is for this to sink in a good number of people after all your posts… They would say the same things to me had I been a Jew, I am quite sure!.. This is something I find hard to understand: how the misunderstanding remain after so many of your attempts at explaining clearly where you stand! I hope the veil of blindness on the hearts, including mine ( on some points i might still be blind, I can admit it ), be torn thoroughly from top to bottom… Let God lead us, not just our feelings and our wounds!
God bless you all!

I don’t doubt the sincereness of the people on this thread, though. But sincereness doesn’t always mean truth. If you believe a lie sincerely and repeat it, you are not lying, but you still are bearing a false testimony, did you know that?
This is why we are asked, when we have found a truth, to remain truth seekers. The truth one has found still isn’t the whole truth!!
Hence the misunderstandings that often pop up! Some truths are mixed up with some fallacy, also. So let’s not be too sure of ourselves, and let’s remain seekers of the Truth.

Anyone who sticks around CAF for a while will find that attacking the church because of the Inquisition, the Crusades, and other alleged atrocities are quite common and in reality have absolutely nothing whatsoever with the Church today. ? Are we not allowed to respond to criticism of the church because of Inquisition?

Both involved persecution of Jews, one on a smaller scale, one on a much larger scale.

Its because some people only see what they want to see. Its human nature, actually!

I’m not exactly sure you’re looking for here. Do you believe you should be given a free pass to criticize the Church because it persecuted Jews in the past? Are we not respond to the msinformation you post about the Inquisition ? Are you expecting me to apologize to you for something individuals did five or 600 years ago?

This may come as a shocker to you, but I also criticize MY OWN religion when I feel they deserve it. I have BOTH criticized AND defended various religions, my own included, when I felt they warranted it.

You act as if I am singling out your religion, when in fact I am not.

All the more reason to pray for the blinding veil covering the eyes of the hearts to be torn completely from top to buttom so that God’s Light can enter in them and make them see things His way.

Correction, estesbob: “because many Catholics (not the Catholic Church per se, it’s not the same thing!!!) persecute Jews in the past?”

estesbob;3942906:
The Jews persecuted Christians. I know Paul, a Pharisee, was there when Stephen was stoned to death by a Jewish mob.

There are teachings of certain faiths that deserve criticism, and those that do not. There is no valid criticism of the founder of nor the official teachings of the Catholic Church… not one. But, there can be valid criticism(s) of Catholics. Those who understand and love the Catholic Church will defend this, the Body of Christ. What matters is the truth. The standard of truth is not Sepharad, thank God. However, the truth is someone. The Truth is Jesus the Christ.

With all due respect, that is only recorded in the NT, which was never meant to be an historical work, but a religious work of faith.

But even if it did happen, it was limited to a few Christians, and in one time period only. The long, sad history of Christian persecution of Jews involved many thousands upon thousands of Jews, and lasted 2000 years.

there is no if about it it did happen. Oh really give me some modern-day cases in our lifetime where Christians have persecuted Jews then if you say it is still going on prove it. And what about all the Christians that are denied property and other right by the Jewish government in Israel? Is that acceptable?
