The parish I go to has Mass on Christmas Eve and Mass on Christmas Day and was wondering if I could go to both? Isn’t one or the other a Holy Day of Obligation?

Confused!

You can go to as many as you want. i beleive you can only recieve Communion at one of them.

Go to both. Receive Holy Communion at both – if you are properly prepared of course.

I had this question that I was wondering about this morning and last night. I went to the vigil last night at 6:00 for the Immaculate Conception, I also went to the mass today at 9:00. The main reason why I went last night was for confession but I ended up staying for mass. I recieved The Eucharist at both. What does the Church say?

I believe that the current rule is that a person MAY receive Holy Communion no more than twice during one calendar day(that is, between midnight and midnight), provided that at least the second time is at Mass. If someone has already received Holy Communion twice in one day, and that person is in danger of dying, then the person may receive Holy Communion a third time.

If a person attends two Masses in one day, he is not REQUIRED to receive Holy Communion at both of them, even though he may be in a state of grace at both Masses.

So if someone receive Holy Communion at, say, a vigil Mass on Wednesday, and then receives again at the Mass of the holy day on Thursday, then the person received Holy Communion on two days, for once each day.

We used to go to two masses back to back on Christmas Eve and the second one was on Christmas Day and we were told that we could receive communion at both. They encouraged us to go to both. I am talking years ago.

You’re never REQUIRED to receive Holy Communion, you must be in the proper disposition to receive Communion. Fufilling your obligation to go to Mass on Sundays or Holy Days of Obligation does not mean you have to receive Communion.

(Of course, you must receive Communion at least once a year during the Easter Season…but here too, you should ensure you are properly disposed to receiving Communion first).

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, §2.

I think there was an old custom, at least in some communities, of going to mass twice on Christmas and Easter.

Hey! In some people’s minds, that’s all they have to go!
Got to show off those kids dressed so pretty and please Grandma, Ya Know!

You can go to as many Masses as you want at as many churches as you want… You can receive Holy Communion both on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You are not supposed to receive more than once in any given day except in rare well defined circumstances.

Post nine is more accurate.

Paris Blues,

YES! You can go to Mass on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day. 👍

YES! You can receive the Eucharist at Mass on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day. (Assuming you are properly disposed, of course!) 👍

It sounds like you are going to two Masses but one on one day and one on the next. There are no issues with receiving the Eucharist on two consecutive days. The law also says you can receive the Eucharist twice in one day, provided that the second time is at Mass.

Thus, even if the Christmas Eve Mass you go to is actually Midnight Mass and not the Vigil, you can still receive the Eucharist at one of the Christmas Day Masses too.

For those who are interested, there are actually FOUR different Masses for Christmas. One is the vigil Mass. The other three are Christmas Mass at Midnight, Dawn, and Christmas day. So while one could only receive Holy Communion at two of the last three Masses, one could conceivably go to four Masses that all fulfill the obligation for one day yet all have different readings.

So this begs the question:

If the Vigil is celebrated at 6:00 pm and Midnight Mass at 10:00 am, and Mass at Dawn is celebrated at 8:00 am and Christmas Mass during the day is celebrated at 11:00 am, you could attend all four, and you could receive the Eucharist at all four, but because the Midnight Mass isn’t being celebrated at midnight, would it be licit to do so?
