Dear Ahimsa,

I did not know this - you are correct in saying so! I just mean it in a different way than you may accept that is all.
IMHO if you reject one aspect of Jesus - you are rejecting him in entirety.

I am sorry, but that is a part of my belief, and I respect your difference.

Born into Protestantism, batized as teen, left all religion until 20’s, came back to Protestantism but not satisfied, finally joined Catholic faith in mid 30’s TBTG 😃

Hey! I did not read your profile to check your age! So sorry! I never even considered your horrible situation. Thanks be to God that you are able to be free of that type of control.
My oh my. This is an example of how the vocation of marriage is serious.
Raising children is a major responsibility.
Wow. Your post is a great example of how parents need to take this role seriously.

Why did I change? Well, the JW’s were the first people who talked to me about God - albeit totally wrong, but still. Realized the errors in their theology - turned to CoC because of a neighbor who shared his faith in Jesus. Eventually found them to be too legalistic - became “Born Again” - very happy with non-denom churches but left to a Lutheran Church when I wanted more tradition and got fed up with the “show.” Very happy as a Lutheran until a Catholic gave me Rome Sweet Rome & My Life on the Rock - AND told me to ask questions on Catholic.com. The rest is history.

I believe God wanted me to be Catholic all along. He never let go of me … I just needed to find my way. I think my many stops along the way make me APPRECIATE what I have in the Catholic Church. Like I can’t even tell you.

I wouldn’t say I was many “faiths” though. Other than the JW’s - I’ve been a Christian. I just didn’t have the fullness of the Christian faith until now.

I suspect that Mom and/or Dad changed faiths, and he had to go with them!!

Parents divorce in 1972,

Dad remarried a Pentecostal Woman.

After 4 years of wonderful family bliss, I went to live with grandparents whom are Methodist.
 
I was a deist, and an atheist, and an agnostic currently. I never really believed in the Christian God, but sometimes I prayed to him, but I do not do that anymore.

Well, I was born and raised Southern Baptist, left 3 years ago, became agnostic, studied many religions, thought of converting to Catholicism, but then took Buddhist precepts in January of this year. I honestly don’t know day to day what I am. I focus too much on head knowledge instead of deciding on one faith.
I see a lot of posts where someone may mention they were over 5 different faiths and they still are thinking about changing again.

Any speculation as to reasons for this?

Many people encounter things in their lives or events that make them question their faith. And, some just want to keep an open mind and recognize the truth that is in many religions. Some, like me, think and read way too much and become confused about their life and their purpose.
Especially faith conversion that left Jesus out as a result - say like leaving a christian faith for Buddism.

I left my Christian faith initially because of doctrinal issues that I could no longer deal with. I began studying Buddhism and found it very practical and useful for my life now and hereafter. I never outright denied Jesus Christ, but rather pushed him aside in order to deal with certain things.

There are as many reasons for leaving as there are people. It’s a fact of life. I did some research on this issue and found that 50 years ago only 1 in 15 people changed their birth faith for another faith. Now, that number is 1 in 4.

Our world is changing. Technology and globalization have brought Eastern traditions to the West and people are simply searching for a better life. The meshing of so many cultures and religions inevitably leads to people changing faiths.

Conditionally Baptised Roman Catholic at 5 years of age.

Spent some time investigating Evangelicals, but

Chrismated Eastern Orthodox in my later years.
 
To answer the question directly: none. I never had a faith, so I was always faithless, except for some ephemeral periods of time. Well, I think the answer for Antony Flew would be none; he didn’t have faith as an atheist, and he didn’t have faith as a deist.

I don’t consider Buddhism a “faith” but more a philosophy.
 
born and raised church of christ. quit going to church for 10 years. spent the last year as a muslim, but the more i study islam, the more i believe i made a mistake. now, i’m just a theist. i believe in God and that’s as far as it goes. i’m thinking about going back to christianity. but i don’t want to go to the church of christ. that’s why i’m here, to learn about catholicism.

I think “deist” would be a better word than “theist” in your case…
 
United Church of Canada - 39 (almost 40) years.

Catholic, 5.5 years.

I also attended Church of Christ, Baptist, and Plymouth Brethren services, and dabbled in Islam and Buddhism from time to time, during my youth.

I was strongly tempted to convert to the Plymouth Brethren at one point, but the fact that my mentors in that faith kept changing churches (they are currently attending a Mennonite church) prevented me from doing anything about that in any serious way - apparently whatever Plymouth Brethren congregations are available locally aren’t following the precepts of that faith correctly.

So I became Catholic, instead. (There were really only those two choices, ultimately.)
 
Born and raised Roman Catholic–stopped going to Church after confirmation–led a life of debauchery from college through early 30’s–came back into communion with the Church through a series of sacramental confessions which literally transformed my heart—changed “rite” to Byzantine Catholic at about age 40.

Now attending frequent Liturgy and studying Scripture, Church Fathers and Theology (resource readings).

And loving every minute of it! 😃
 
I was baptized and confirmed Catholic as a child, but don’t feel I was sufficiently formed in the faith. I left at 17 to become Baptist (because of a born-again experience, and because I liked the preaching and music, and because of a girlfriend–probably not in that order). Spent 15 years as a Baptist, then spent 4 years as an Anglican because I wanted to get as close to Catholic as I could without being Catholic. I joyfully returned home to the Catholic Church in May 2006.

Well I knew based on your age that it had to do with who you were living with… I just assume it was Mom and Dad 🙂

Interesting reasons for why people change.

I was thinking I would get the same responses of finding error or something that someone showed them to be error that led them running away from something in order to aviod error rather than running to something.

Interesting.

Does anyone here think that religious denominations have made major changes in their beliefs due to an influx of information and exchange with people of other religions?
