How Many HOURS PER WEEK Do You Listen to CATHOLIC RADIO?

Like 10-12 years ago, I used to listen to a LOT of Catholic radio. EWTN Shortwave was on all the time.

When the various formats under the Catholic Radio Network holdings came on the air, I listened quite a bit, also. That all was an interesting experiment. (I think I liked the “All Gregorian Chant All The Time” stunting the best of all their airrings, though.) I tuned in regularly to CA Live and Al Kresta (once he returned to afternoons); and was a frequent listener to Ray Flynn. Never was a huge fan of Dr. Ray (though he is actually probably the best radio talent on Catholic stations) and would often turn him off (too abrasive for my tastes). Preferred Colleen Kelly Mast. “The Radix Guys” had a nice show briefly as part of one of the early incarnations. Checked out all of the shows on the air there periodically. But after 820 got sold off, I didn’t have much of a chance to listen anymore.

Now what we have is Relavant Radio. Really, I don’t care for it much. Most of the shows are geared at a Catholic 101 kind of level, it seems. I’m usually thinking, “OK so I KNOW this already!” and quickly turn the dial to something more interesting or pertinent. I’ll tune in to the local shows from the Archdiocese (even though they are amatuerish) just to hear something local and be informed about whatever is going on. I find Drew to be overly dramatic and sensationalist at times. I also don’t think he runs a tight show. Sean Harriet has a good show which is worthwhile, but (again) it’s often at a kind of really Catholic living basics level that doesn’t suit me. (Plus I’m not much of a morning listener, usually.) I heard Shelia’s show during it’s first week and liked what I heard. Primarily because she had good guests booked who were articulate and could basically take over the platform to say what they needed to without interference. I haven’t been back to it much, though. RRs entire format seems geared towards a target audience of middle aged moms who are “spritual but not necessarily religious” (as one Midwest media reporter in a major newspaper once put it). And I just don’t fit that demo. Nonethless, I’ll breeze by and check it out from time to time to see if there is anything interesting on. Typically, I’m gone within a few minutes. However, if there is something of pertinent timeliness as a topic, I might stick with it.

With EWTN picking up Kresta and CA’s extra hour, I’m going to have to keep my shortwave closeby again (at least when I don’t have to go out and about) so that I can check out those shows. Generally speaking, they are probably the two best things going in Catholic radio. Probably because they are run by quality experienced professionals who have both the talent and knack for the medium to effectively communicate over the air.

Oh, and I like Lino when I can catch his show. But there is too much giggling at times.

Kresta is on Relevant Radio on Mondays thru Fridays at 6PM Central Time.

I love Relevant Radio!!! When I am off during a day of the week I have it tuned in ALL DAY! I am a 30-40 aged male and love it!

What station do you listen to?

What are your favorite programs?

I listen to Relevant Radio WPJP in the Milwaukee area. They just started a local program called “Relevant To You.” I’m hoping they do more within the diocese. I like Morning Air, The Right Questions and Drew, but it seems like they have a lot of the same guests over and over. I do like Lino, but I agree with the guy from Chicago in that he laughs too much. Aside from RR who by the way no longer runs CA as of this week, I like listening to Ave Maria and EWTN through the net. I’m glad Teresa and Al are now with EWTN. I have a short wave, but I think they have been having trouble lately with their signal. But, if nothing else, I can hear Catholic Answers on the net or play the replays. I also recently turned my fiance on to Dr. Ray. I really think he is the most entertaining Catholic broadcaster. Relevant Radio almost took him off the air when the show moved to Ave Maria, but luckily, somehow, the show was saved. Bishop Sheen now plays in the former Catholic Answers slot.

For my Dec birthday, DH put Sirius in my car :D! I drive an hour each way to work, so, there is 5 hours right there (my AM commute is when EWTN broadcasts Mass, and I feel strange listening in the car, so, I listen to Martha Stewart in the AM commute time…)

Sirius radio is well worth the $$ for EWTN radio alone.

Then, at work, I listen to AVE Maria radio on line…

I get 10 hour plus.

HA! That’s funny! I like the show too, but for grown men, they DO do alot of giggling! 😛

I listen at least 40 hours most weeks. We have no Catholic radio here, but I keep Ave Maria Radio on over the internet all day at work. Sometimes I have it on at home during the evenings.

I would like to get SIRIUS radio so I will be able to listen in my car as well.

My favorites are: Fr. Corapi, Dr. Ray, Teresa Tomeo & Al Kresta.

Can’t really be heard in Chicago proper (winter hours) unless you’re a die hard radio geek with a really good radio who’s willing to try and draw out a signal through the mud (like me).

Why in the world Loyola University made a broadcasting deal with that outlet for their basketball games, I just don’t get. It didn’t work for UIC, why should it for them. Games can’t even be heard on their own campuses. I suppose for home games that isn’t a problem, but it doesn’t help if they’re playing at the Nutter Center in Dayton or even at UWM.

I’d also argue that Al’s show would be the better live programming (along with CA Live) for PM drive.

On another note — EWTN will be covering the upcoming March For Life in Washington DC…

I listen to both 820 AM and 930 AM in the Chicago area. I like most of the programming, but especially Morning Air, Father Corapi and Dr. Ray. I have learned so much from Father Corapi. I would love it if Dr. Ray were on in his time slot every day instead of sharing it with Dr. Colleen. I do switch back and forth between the two stations so that I can catch Catholic Answers - I’ve learned a great deal from these shows. I do like Drew’s show, and I enjoy Father Altier - a show for him would be nice too! Relevant Radio has become an absolutely essential part of my day. Keep up the good work!

I don’t, although sometimes I keep EWTN TV on in the background while I play online or putter around the house. I’m more likely to listen to country music on the radio.

We don’t get any catholic radio in our area. There are a few evangelical stations, none of which I listen to.

I recently got an iPod. Are there any good catholic podcasts?
I love Busted Halo. You can subscribe with iTunes, using their search or you can download each episode from their website at www.bustedhalo.com. I listen to a bunch of podcasts:
CatholicMormon podcast (mixed married couple, wife converting to Catholicism)
Light of the East (hosted by a Byzantine Catholic priest)
The Station of the Cross: calling all Catholics.
Verbum Domini (the daily readings)
105 Live (the English language program of Vatican Radio)
Catholic Insider (hosted by a Dutch priest)
All of these can be found on the iTunes search. Let me know if you need web addresses to download by hand. I think most of them are also on www.podcastalley.com.

Sadly, I get no Catholic radio!!! Also, I have XM and have paid up for a while so I won’t be getting Sirius. There are tons of evangelical stations and oddly, on one Jimmy Swaggert runs I have heard Catholic programming. But, that station isn’t very strong here. I wrote XM on carrying EWTN or Ave Maria but never got a response.😦

I would listen over the internet at work but my boss is anti radio. At home, I have 2 young girls and a busy wife so I don’t really have time to listen. My only hope would be an mp3 player but I can’t see shelling out for that. Someone pray for Catholic radio in Northwest Louisiana for me!

We don’t have Catholic radio here in San Diego county, which is really strange due to the fact that we have a huge hispanic Catholic population, and that Catholic Answers in broadcast right here in the city of El Cajon. So when I can, I listen to the pre-recorded broadcasts from the webpage, or I can get ETWN thru the computer.

As a side-note, I just listened to this broadcast, and it is amazing!! The word must get out, and constantly, that abortion is so damaging to everyone, including fathers of aborted babies!

Kudos to Catholic Answers Live for this powerful broadcast! 👍

Are you kidding? No radio in SD? I thought I hear callers on CAL from the SD area all the time?
Wow, the people at CAF need to make some noise about this.

Father Altier’s homilies and appearances on Relevant Radio have been censored by the Archbishop here. I just went to check out his homilies today and found the website was essentially shut down with the following message:

**You Cannot Listen to

A Voice in the Desert**

In obedient compliance with the expressed written request of Most Reverend Harry J. Flynn

Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

Father Altier’s homilies and spiritual presentations
can no longer be published on www.desertvoice.org
or broadcast on Relevant Radio.

We regret any inconvenience and humbly ask for your prayers.

All concerns should be directed in a spirit of charity to: Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis

Most Reverend Harry J. Flynn

226 Summit Avenue
Saint Paul, MN 55102
(651) 291-4400

communications@archspm.org

I wonder why. Maybe because he’s not politically correct enough for Archbishop Flynn. He’s a good guy, I’m sure, but why censor Father Altier? He’s completely loyal to the church!
