I used to drive about 70 minutes out of my way to go to church where they actually followed the liturigal rules and such.

Thank God I was able to move closer to church - I still drive 10 minutes more to go to the good one, even though there is a “semi-servicable” church right down the church.

I currently live 2 miles from my church. It is great if I am running late or getting the kids to CCD. I find it is nicer to be involved in different parish activities because I only live a short distance. I like that I drive past my Church everyday.

I feel belonging to the Church in my community helps me to connect with my neighbors. The families that we know from church are also the families that we play little league with and go to school with. I meet them in the store. My Catholic community expands outside the church building and I am glad to connect with it. If we went to church outside of our community, I would not knowingly have this mutual bond with many of my neighbors.
You bring up some really good points. I too enjoy seeing my church everyday and I like the fact that I am a part of my community. Very good post!😃

I’m a bit baffled bythe way the voting is going. We become the church we attend. If we don’t necassarily agree with something can’t we help change it?
I tried. Sort of. And former pastor made sure that my understanding of Catholicism was considered dubious. He did so publically and, as a result, have no credibility there. After one Sunday when Sister Principal gave the homily I decided it was the last straw and now drive an hour to a church that had priests that were orthodox. And bonus, excellent architecture, too. the former pastor said he was willing to incorperate any statue, icon, or whatever as long as it was beautiful and tasteful.

Iconography is very important to me because I’m rather visual. I think I would drive a little farther to a well appointed church (as long as orthodoxy reigned there) because I do find stained glass, statues help keep me focused on why I’m in church.

Have any of you read Home at Last edited by Rosalind Moss? The Chapter titled The Break-in and Our Lady’s Assitance by James J. Pitts puts it beautifully.

I’m usually more traditional, which would make me a stickler for parish boundaries. But I recently attended Mass at a parish that was such a freak show that it will be a very sad day indeed if I ever have to so much as set foot in that Church again. Therefore, I can imagine an exceptionally horrible parish (be it liturgical abuse or heterodoxy) making me seriously consider transgressing against that old-school sense of propriety.

I walk 2.5 miles to St. Johns although Transfiguration is really my “parish” and St. Mary’s is nearly a mile closer.

Church is about truly feeling safe in the presance of God. Its about the rules of the Church its about how others in the parish treat you.

I will only go to a Parish which has a strong Pro-Life presence & also has perpetual adoration.

I am technically in the parish boundaries of one parish (which is pretty liberal) but I go to the one that is more orthdox in the parish boundary that’s next to it. Just as close, yet much better 🙂

I am not a member of my local parish. Technically, I don’t belong to a parish at all. I belong to a ‘community’ at the university where I work.

It’s not that I have anything against the local parish. It seems to be a great parish. I sometimes go to a weekday Mass there on my way to work.

In my case, at the recommendation of a priest who has no direct connection with either the parish or the community, I went through RCIA at the university. I decided to stay put there.

One factor you may left out on your poll … Access to transportation. I don’t own a car and the nearest church is 2 miles away. The nearest bus stop is 3 miles away, and the next nearest church is an additional 5 miles away. I attend the church that is 2 miles away. It’s a wonderful, peaceful walk on a Sunday morning … especially in the winter.😉

In His Peace!

That should really be reported to the Bishop. I live in a diocese with a liberal reputation and the local Newman Center was having women give homilies. After compliants, the Bishop put a stop to it. At least worth the try.

Aesthetic appeal of a church is most important to me as an artist and a Christian (Catholic). Any feel the same way? I happen to adore the “smells and bells” of the RCC. And music reaches deeper into my soul than any Homily or sermon ever could-------

HE reaches us all in different ways --brings us all closer to Him according to how He made us all! PTL!!
