How many people here use missals or missalettes? Do you think they are helpful, unhelpful, or neither?

I voted that I use one, but I don’t follow the entire Mass through the missal. I also prefer to hear the Gospel not read it, so I put the missal down after the responsorial psalm.

I generally use one to follow the readings, but it’s not always necessary if the lector is understandable. Often, though, if the responsorial psalm is sung, it’s harder to understand, so the missal or missalette is useful. I don’t usually use it to follow along with the Eucharistic prayer.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops publishes a Catholic Book of Worship that is a combo missal/hymnal kind of thing. So, I use it for the hymns, and for the Gloria (since I just can’t remember the words in the right order) and for the response for the psalm (so I don’t spend the rest of the time during the psalm trying to make sure I remember the response).

It doesn’t include the readings for the Mass.

I only use one for the responsorial psalm(s).
Same here, although occasionally we’ll need to sing a hymn from the missalette instead of the hymnal.

I use the Magnificat which I like for its size (new one put out each month so it is small in size), the morning and evening prayer sections for each day, and the meditation of the day. I follow the Mass sections except that I close it during the actual Consecration. I find that using a missal or missalette helps to keep me focused and that I am less likely to be distracted during Mass. I also like to make notes in the margins if the priest makes a point during the homily that I want to remember.

I own a 1962 New Marian Missal. It is a great item to own.

Advantages of owning a missal:
-Study the propers before Mass(Gospel, episitle, gradual, secret, etc)
-Encouragement of private devotions(Rosary, Sacred Heart, First Saturdays, litanies)
-a guide in praying the Mass
-descriptions of vestments, altar, church, titles, feast, etc

Well, I use one when I attend a Tridentine Mass. I’m going to be playing for my first Tridentine High Mass on the Feast of the Assumption… it’s gonna be rather scary since I haven’t done it before and don’t know what to look for… any Tridentine organists out there?

As for the Novus Ordo, I’m almost always playing the organ at Mass, so I’m too busy to use one. I’m familiar with the GIRM, I know the rubrics and the texts… usually I hear the propers of the day on EWTN as I’m driving to my parish at o’dark hundred in the morning so I pick them up that way.

Because I’m part of the Music Ministry, I have one on hand at home. Even though the Sunday readings are listed in the church bulletin, it’s much easier to read the passages from there, and thus it’s easier to pick songs for the Mass.

Also, I use the Missal to look up the dail readings and Psalms.

We don’t use the Responsorial in the Missal as we use seasonal Responsorial Psalms, which are in the Music Issues.

People have different ways in which they learn I think. For me, reading is how I retain information the best so I like to use and read at least the scripture readings from the missalette. I’m familiar enough with the Eucharistic prayer to put it down for that.

I think it is a great tool, especially for children… it helps them to take an active role in the Mass and we are asked to do… Participation in the Mass is expected and gives you grace, and any help be it Missal or Bible is a good thing… 👍

I have ADD so following along in the missal is the way I keep my attention leashed.

My husband uses the missalette and Iuse the Magnificat.
I really like the Magnificat because it also has prayers and reflections for the day.
One thing pro and sometimes a con is that when we’re following along and Father gets to certain prayers (Eucharistic prayer IV this week) he changes the words to be “inclusive” he won’t say men but changes it to us. It drives me nutty and the worst part is that he justifies it and so does our diocese!

Ditto here!

Also, one of our readings is generally in English and the other in Spanish. The Gospel is always in English (since my priest isn’t bilingual) - so use of the missalette for the readings is necessary in order for me to understand. Also, I like to read through the readings prior to mass also - it helps me reflect more deeply upon their message during the Liturgy of the Word. I don’t follow the missalette through the Liturgy of the Eucharist, but my younger children use their children’s missals.

I use it before Mass to familiarize myself with the reading so that I may better participate in the Mass

OOPS!!! Voted wrong. I don’t use a missal at Mass, but do use one at home to read the daily readings…

While it is best to HEAR the readings, rather than read along with the reader or priest, it is sometimes helpful for people who do not hear well to have their “captions”…

 Maybe this is the wrong forum, but I do use the Roman Daily Missal. In ordinary time where do you find the preface that is read at daily Mass. It starts out with, what I still call, the Epistle, unless it is feast day. Does anyone know what preface the priest is using. Also, some days, a Gospel is read and it is not even close to what is in my missal for that particular day. Anyone?

I used to use one, but don’t anymore. When I first returned to the Church, my dad bought me a 3 volume St. Joseph’s Missal (Sunday with two weekday volumes). I used it to learn the order of the Mass, but couldn’t use it in church due to a difference in languages (the Missal was in English and the Mass was in Spanish). For a while, we used a 3 month Missalette, and I made sure to buy the current one in the parish office. We haven’t had them here for a long while, though.

The songs and readings are in the bulletin, so I don’t need one for that. I do miss studying the prayers and readings for the day before going to Mass, but I have found that the readings are available on the Web (at the USCCB web site), so I use that for studying the readings. Now, if I could get a good Spanish language Missal approved by the PRCCB. . .

For the New Mass, I use the Magnificat. It is a better size for me to hold. When I go to a Tridentine, I use one of those little red missalettes. I want to get a different one, though.

God bless,
