Our family prays at all meals at home. However, we do not make that transition to restaraunts. Perhaps fear of what people think etc.

So what is your custom?

Thanks
Eric

It was the custom of my family when I was a child. It was not the custom of my wife’s family. My wife and I neglected to do this with our own children. Even though our children are now adults, I have recently begun to introduce the practice when we all gather together at a restaurant. So far no complaints. I think it’s a great practice.

We do, if I slip up the others remember. Our kids are young adults now, but they remember.

We as a family always pray at restaurants using the sign of the cross and a prayer said together. We try to keep it down since it is said in unison, so as not to be a distraction to other.

I do. A priest at my parish taught me that I can make a smaller sign of the cross.

I always pray before a meal in restaurants. My husband, who is not catholic, is actually proud of me that I do. If for some reason I forget to pray, he’ll remind me. I also know that my goddaughter prays in restaurants and so does my mother.

I’ve been in some restaurants that were so bad you pray after you eat.

[With apologies to Rodney Dangerfield for stealing his material.]

My Family trys to pray at all meals. We can not provide for ourselves but only God above. Give thanks to him who provides.

Greg-

I am curious, what exactly is a smaller sign of the cross??

my husband and I pray quietly before meals in restaurants as well as at home - though sometimes we forget to.

As a child, my family would always pray in restaraunts - out-loud and in unison. Now, as a parent myself, my family and I pray in public, but we do it quietly and by ourselves. That way it is a conversation between each of us and God, not a show for everyone else in the restaraunt to overhear.

Thanks!
Greg

I pray very quietly to myself. However, when I take my pastor out for a meal, he always says a prayer out loud in a low voice. Don’t forget to invite your pastors out for a meal from time to time.

A child was asked, " Do you have to pray before meals?" She said, " “No, my mom is a pretty good cook.”

My husband and I always pray before meals, whether in a restaurant or at home. We make the Sign of the Cross and say the “Benedic, Domine” in low voices. When we are with friends or family members who are not Catholic, we pray silently to ourselves.

We pray before meals at home, on the rare occasions that we do eat out, at other peoples home when we are invited to eat. It’s pretty hard though, keeping 4 toddlers who LOVE to pray before each meal 2 or 3 times a little quiet.

Somtimes when I eat junk food, I wonder if I should pray in thanks or ask forgiveness for eating it.🙂

We pray before every meal…even in the car when we hit the drive thru. It seems disingenuous just to pray when we want something, but to omit praying in thanks for the gift of a good meal. Maybe it’s all those years of Felician nuns, but any reason to pray in gratitude is a good reason to pray period.

When we’re at home, we say grace out loud. When we’re out to eat, we both fold our hands and bow our heads and say grace quietly to ourselves…

This is very good. However, with all due respect, can I ask WHY not pray out loud in a restuarant? I do, and after Mass on Sundays when with my Church friends and we have lunch at a diner, (there can be up to five of us) we pray out loud. If people can do other negative things out in public, we do a POSITIVE thing and pray. I also see this as a first ammendment right of our great Constitution: Freedom of speech and expression. Plus, one must not be embarrased to give public testimony of God.

You HAVE to pray in restaurants. It will set a bad image for your children. It is showing them that they do not have to share their faith in public, or that it is something to be ashamed of. That is exactly what Jesus was against. and remember, if we deny him on earth he will deny us in heaven. I know it is scary, but who cares what people think. and so many more people will start to do it if you will, because it shows pride. We need to be a witness for the world. www.sevensorrows.com

My husband and I always pray in resturants. We bless our selves before and after saying grace out loud. If we are with friends, we invite them to join us. If they don’t we pray and others wait until we are done. It’s a wonderful way to witness to your faith. Don’t pass up the opportunity!!
