Well, I guess I’m gonna get mentioned on Rev White’s blog again for interacting with some of his people.
I don’t have to read n-C apologetics books though I do look in on some of the various sites and read the same ole same ole. I’m currently on a couple of n-C forums (against my better judgement). As I’ve said before I spent over 34 years as a devout whatever I was at the time, and am well familiar with the whys and wherefores of what they believe as opposed to what we Catholics really do believe.
I’m not some lame pew warmer…never have been. I’m one of those guys who will stand toe to toe with most anyone and lay out a gospel witness on them in a heartbeat. I still do, just as a Catholic now. I have read the Bible through many times and taken courses and read books and anything else that I can do to know what others believe and I know why I believe what I believe. I went to Catholic schools for 12 years but didn’t pay the least attention at Mass or in religion classes, so that by age 17 when I left the church I didn’t know beans about the faith that I was leaving.
When a guy alleged that we worshipped Mary I stepped up because I knew that was wrong and got put down for it, so I went looking into Catholic teachings on the issue and discovered that I was right and that Catholics do not worship the Blessed Virgin. When I took my evidence back to the guy…he wouldn’t even discuss it. I continued to dig and discovered that what the Catholic Church teaches really is the New Testament Christianity. I know the non-Catholic teachings about backward and forward and there’s nothing in them that interests me in the least.
The one thing that I will not do is let some n-C, no matter how “well intentioned” make inaccurate allegations and statements about our most holy faith without answering with the truth.
For some reason, many n-Cs seem to think that we don’t know what they’re gonna say or that we won’t have an answer. That’s ridiculous because the Catholic Church has been answering heresies for 2,000 years and answering the same old “protestant”, “reformation”, “evengelical”, “whatever-you-wanna-call-yourselves”, for the last 500 years as well.
I have no problem with anyone believing whatever they please and disagreeing with us, that’s between them and the Holy Spirit, but when they persist in alleging the same bunk that we’ve answered a zillion times I have to wonder.
I know that “witnessing” and “soul winning” is almost the litmus test of most n-Cs commitment to Our Lord, but when I tell ya what we believe, have the good grace to give me the same courtesy of the Holy Spirit that I attempt to do you and take it at face value and go bother a Jehovah’s Witness, Shepherd’s Chapel, or some nonbeliever and let me and my brother and sister Catholics get on with being about Our Father’s business. I know that less informed Catholics are targeted for evangelism away from the faith and I frankly resent that bigtime in the same way you n-Cs would feel if we did the same to you.
I don’t go out looking for “victims” for my apologetics abilities (such as they are) and that’s why I would never bother to call in a radio show. It’s not even a level playing field and so it’s a waste of time. (They have control of what is heard and can cut me off or offer their own spin and I won’t be able to, so why bother?) If you wanna know what Catholics believe, come ask us. We’re not antichrist/whore of babylon and we have nothing to hide.
So Barbara & Kaycee, if you left and you’re happy have a nice day and all, but don’t think for a second that when you make an erroneous allegation or statement about the Catholic Church, that the knowlegeable Catholics on here are gonna sit around and let it go unchallenged. That’s just not gonna happen.
Pax vobiscum,
