How many rosaries do you own??

I do not know. I have bought hundreds and given most of them away. I do not know how many remain.

I only have one, because it really becomes a part of me; a tool necessary for deep meditation. My last one went with my Grandfather when he was buried. The one I have now is from the Shrine of Our Lady de la Leche in St. Augustine. I had prayed in that shrine many times for my babies, and others, so it’s very special.

One Rosary that I inherited from my great grandfather, and one “finger” Rosary I keep on my key ring. Having more than these wouldn’t really help me any. The “finger” Rosary is helpful on long drives and on the treadmill.

We have lots just in case we’re having a party and a rosary breaks out and the guests are left unprepared. One time we had some people over for dinner and just decided to say the rosary good thing we had a bunch, my in-laws (non-Catholic) were like umm… okaaay… They were confused.
Seriously I come from a big family and we always had a bunch of rosaries around and when it was rosary time whoever was in the house friends, family, Catholic or not were given a rosary and invited to pray along or just sit and think about it.

I definitely have more than six! Several have been given to me as gifts, one as an “Oh, I’m so excited you’re going to become Catholic” gift, two as Confirmation gifts, one as an “I love you, dear friend!” gift… I’ve bought two new ones for myself before the gift ones were given to me and an antique one from a shop because it was unusual and I couldn’t bear to leave it languishing in an antiques store… and I think that’s it!

Oh, the antique one: I bought it while I was in Louisiana, in a charming antiques shop in a charming town called Ponchatoula. I was only recently committed to converting after a couple of years of trying to weasel out of it (hey! being a Protestant is easier!). I had some real problems getting my mind around the Blessed Virgin, and the rosary just sent me up a wall! I’d been using my rosary beads to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, which was a lot more comfortable for me at that time.

So I found this lovely old rosary, made out of some kind of seeds, and the Corpus is very worn, and it has a lovely patina – obviously this rosary had been used a lot, and I don’t understand why it wasn’t buried with its prior owner (but I’ve imagined several possible scenarios). I actually learned how to pray the Rosary on these beads, and I always felt as if the prior owner has been praying with me, helping me along, each time I have used them.

I put three because those are my main ones I use, but on further reflection, I probably have closer to six, not counting our cheapie “house rosaries” we have just in case.

I was touched by this because I always feel the same way when I see a well-worn Rosary in an antique or second hand store. I always wonder about the former owner and wish I could rescue them all from languishing in a glass case. Funny, I don’t feel that way about new Rosaries, just the ones with some personal history.

I have quite a few – not sure exactly how many. I have one in nearly every room in the house, and three in the living room (for family Rosary). I carry one in my purse and also have one in the car. My husband and son each carry their own, and my son has two or three others in his room, and one in his Bible case.

The one I use most is the one in my car, which is the Rosary my mother had with her when she died. I also have the Rosary my father had when he died.

I also make and repair Rosaries, so there are usually all sorts about the house in various states of repair or completion.

I have a lot…I give them away to my CCD students, etc. Of course I have one or two in my purse, car, bedroom, family room and I guess every room in the house.

One in my car, one from my first COmmunion, one beside my bed that has a fragile chain, and one in my desk at work. I also have a large, wall type that I did not count and a few cheep plastic ones around. I also have lost a few through fires and moving and such. In the end, you cannot have too many as long as you pray!

I have one hanging in my rearview mirror, one in my pocket and on custom-made that I use whenever I go to pray in front of the Blessed Sacrament during adoration. I have also lost a few…

I only own one rosary… I’ve never really had more than one at once. Well technically you could say I own two… but I misplaced one at a friend’s house and told them to keep it should they find it… so I have ONE in my possession. Just a plain white plastic one that I got at my church’s gift shop for a dollar… that’s the kind every rosary I’ve owned has been.

I break the good ones so now I use the ones you buy in the back of the Church for $1. I have them all over, rear view, purse, bedside, glove compartment, desk drawer, side table drawer (under the shrine).

I always make sure I have several with me because I live under the delusion that my boys will start saying the Rosary with me at Holy Hour.

I own more than 6 and I have a very good reason for that. My mom was a rosary maker for years, until she passed away at 79. She did it as her mission in life. She belonged to a group at church and they met about once a month and talked and made rosaries. They all had many children and did not feel they could participate in other missions of the church.

She gave all my children a rosary on their Communion Day. She gave me and my husband a special one on our wedding day. Every time my children went over to her place she let them take one of the plastic ones she made for the missions. I would say it was one of their favorite Grandma memories.

My eyes tear up as I write this because she has been gone to her eternal reward for 5 years now, and I miss her terribly. I took her own rosary when she died. I now say it daily and use one of her Novena books. I now feel the comfort she felt saying the Rosary. I feel blessed to have had my mother as a mother.

At my mom’s wake, many of the seniors in her community came up to us and told us that my mom was their resident Rosary fixer. If you pray every day your Rosary can break, and she was on call! I just called my sister to ask for one of the pliers to be able to now fix my rosaries.

Getting back to your question, I think I have about 30 Rosaries. Thank you mom.

I have gotten rid of all but 4 rosaries. I have one that I use daily and one on my bedpost. I can’t see any point in having so many rosaries. You can only use one at a time. I am making crocheted rosaries to send to the troops in Afganistan and Iraq. I have about 20 made at this time. There was a posting on the internet asking for rosaries for both Catholic and Protestant servicemen. If you would like the address it is:

I have about four. I use only one of them unless I get to the Adoration Chapel and realize that I’ve left it in my other pants, or the car, or … Then I use one of the many roasries that are in a basket for people to borrow. But then again, I have said the rosary on my fingers in a pinch. The beads and chain are good, but the rosary is a prayer / meditation - that’s why God gave us ten fingers you know ( ).

I have six, because the seventh, the one I carry with me, gave out entirely. I haven’t replaced the one I took from my car.

I have a little string and plastic one that I keep by my bed and take to the hospital.

I have a really battered one that I use at home. It was well worn when a sister gave it to me sixty years ago and has been rebuilt with various pieces.

I have the mother of pearl one my grandmother gave my grandfather at their wedding over a hundred years ago. I’ve now had it longer than he did, but it is too fragil for use.

Then there is one from Lourdes and one from Medjugorje. Someone gave me each. I have not been to either place.}

Right now I have about six dozen, but that’s because I make them, the plasic-and-cord mission kind and the all-twine knotted ones like the Rosary Army uses.

For my own use, though, I keep only one standard rosary and one Orthodox-style prayer rope.
