Margarite - I am fascinated by the parenthetical additions to your list, I don’t believe I have ever seen the Doctors with their “specialties.” St. Teresa of Avila’s feast day is my birthday (October 15) and she is Doctor of Prayer!

What is your source for the list? Is it common knowledge that the Drs. are associated with a specific virtue? Where can I find more information?

😃

I just typed Doctors of the Church into Google and clicked on a few web sites to make sure the lists were the same and I liked this list because it gave a little more info. Here is the website:
doctorsofthecatholicchurch.com/IOD.html

The Doctors are classified into six periods from the current modern era to the western Roman times. Each Doctor has a title in parenthesis. St. Thomas Aquinas is called The Angelic Doctor. Some titles are traditional; others are not. Most Doctors have many titles but I have included only one.

I have used Father Louis Miller’s classification listed in the sources. We have 8 “Ecumenical Doctors”, 4 from the West and 4 from the East. There are 10 Early Doctors, 7 from the Middle Ages and 6 from the Counter-Reformation. The Modern Era has only 2.

There is a book from Tanbooks The 33 Doctors of the Church By: Fr. Christopher Rengers O.F.M. Cap., it is about $33 dollars. My Dad has this book though I have never read it, I do plan on making a purchase when I get a chance.

**Synopsis
**The 33 Doctors of the Church. Here are 33 chapters about the greatest minds and greatest Saints the Catholic Church has ever produced. Written in a down-to-earth style, The 33 Doctors of the Church is a book that will be loved and appreciated by everyone. This monumental study could easily become 33 small books. But here it is in one compelling volume! Includes St. Athanasius, the defender of the doctrine of Christ’s divinity, who was banished 5 times from his diocese for fidelity to Catholic teaching. In a moment of weakness, Pope Liberius even signed his condemnation! Impr. 715 pgs, PB

I hope that is helps out. Take Care and God Bless:)

VERY NICE THANK YOU!!!👍

I decided a while back to try and read at least one work for each doctor–and it was incredibly rewarding; I highly recommend it (if anyone wants to know what works I read, send me a PM). I was also inspired to write this chaplet which I think can be edifying–each prayer is based on what I learned from the particular doctor(it’s a bit long!):

In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

To him that giveth me wisdom, will I give glory (Sir. 51:23). Shew, O Lord, thy ways to me, and teach me thy paths. Direct me in thy truth, and teach me; for thou art God my Saviour; and on thee have I waited all the day long (Psalm 25:4-5). Give me wisdom, that sitteth by thy throne, and cast me not off from among thy children (Wis. 9:4). Blessed are thy men, and blessed are thy servants, who stand before thee always, and hear thy wisdom (1 Kings 10:8). They that are learned shall shine as the brightness of the firmament: and they that instruct many to justice, as stars for all eternity (Dan. 12:3). Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O Holy Doctor, St. Ambrose, pray to God that He may sanctify us with His Holy Sacraments and that His Spirit may give us the gift of piety, so that we may shine forth His truth and holiness in all we do. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O Holy Doctor, St. Jerome, intercede for us that we may always have a love of the Holy Scriptures and that we may receive from the Holy Spirit the gift to understand the truth of God’s word in all it’s power. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O Holy Doctor, St. Augustine, pray to God that He may send us the graces we need for salvation, especially the graces for repentance and perseverance. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

O Holy Doctor, St. Gregory the Great, intercede for us that Our Lord may send us the grace necessary for true humility, not only in our service towards our brethren, but also in our service to God in the Holy Liturgy. Amen.

Margarite, thank you so much for the list of Doctors of the Church & their specialties.

Good Lord. You obviously are on the internet. Go to Google.com and type in Doctors of The Church. There are 33 of them. All Saints.
How about a little kindness, Ruffie? My mother may have asked that question. At 82, she knows how to do email and has a few “favorite” websites that I set up for her to access that she can navigate. But to Google would not be something she would even know where to begin.

(And her feelings would be hurt by your chastisement.)

Thank you ,I did try but I must have worded it wrong for I was not able to find out

I suspect it made ruffie feel good to post that to me…😦 So perhaps it wasn’t a total loss…

Very fascinating and illuminating information. I only knew of a few of the doctors of the church. Threads like this one are very enlightening. Thanks.

I apologize. You’re right. I’m very sorry. I should have been more thoughtful.🤷

Aw gee. I guess I was unthoughtful. I apologize for sounding sarcastic. Truly. God Bless.🤷
