My altar server sons were taught to ring the bells 3 times during elevation at consecration. Why did a our new parish priest then reprimand them and tell them to ring the bells once each time? I would have asked our priest but he did not like “a challenge” of his authority.

General Instruction of the Roman Missal:
  1. A little before the consecration, when appropriate, a server rings a bell as a signal to the faithful. According to local custom, the server also rings the bell as the priest shows the host and then the chalice.
There is no standard given for how many times the bells are to be rung. It would appear that the celebrant is free to instruct the servers as he wishes.
