How many times cam someone recieve the Eucharist in one day?

I am being Confirmed and recieving First Eucharist this coming Sunday(Oct 7) and my son is singing in the choir at a later Mass that day and I was wondering if I could recieve Holy Communion again…thanks guys!!!

The teaching is not crystal clear, but I believe the generally accepted interpretation is that you can receive communion twice in one day as long as you participate in each Mass. The reason I say the teaching is not crystal clear is because I have heard it argued that you may take communion (in certain circumstances) more often then just twice.

Canon law (I think it’s Canon 916?) states that a third time is permitted, for example, in the case of a person in danger of death, who can receive the Eucharist in their Last Rites regardless of having already received twice.

And of course priests who, in cases of need, celebrate more than two masses on a given day, receive at each mass they celebrate.

Canon Law (912-923) deals with the reception of the Eucharist.

Can. 917 is the most relevant to the question, and states: “A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of can. 921, §2.”

In other words, if you receive the Eucharist twice in one day, the second time must be at a Mass, not just a “communion service” (as EWTN’s Expert explains).

As to why there is a limit, probably to curb overzealous Eucharistic piety, wherein one’s day is spent going from church to church to receive the Eucharist. Maybe.

Thanks. I didn’t realize this. I asked this question to our director of liturgy, because I took my son to mass in the morning (he was altar serving) and then attended mass again that day (because i was cantor). He said it was fine to receive twice as long as you participate in the mass on a liturgical level. ie. I had a reason to be at that second mass because I was serving in the mass.

Not sure if that answer is right.

I believe your director is mistaken. You don’t need to have a “reason” to attend the Mass. But you do need to be there – You cannot just pop in at the end and receive communion* because it is in distributed in the context of a Mass – The canon says you have to participate in the Mass.
