How many times could we receive the Eucharist in the same day?

I’ve been always told that I could receive twice a day, and this page says the same:

However, my g/f told me someone she knows says you can receive as many times as you attend masses on the same day.

Could somebody verify that we can only receive twice a day?

Thanks!

This was clarified in the Second Edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in response to a query similar to yours. Footnote #222 to paragraph #1388 reads in part:

The faithful may receive the Holy Eucharist only a second time on the same day [Cf Pontificia Commissio Codici Iuris Canonici Authentice Intrepretando, *Responsa ad proposita dubia, 1: AAS 76 (1984) 746].”

The exception to this rule is Viaticum; a person who is dying may receive Communion again even if he or she has already received twice that day.

Not only that but the second time must be at a Mass, not a Communion Service or when Eucharist is distributed at someone’s home.

The real question, and point, is that it’s really not necessary to receive more than once a day, but the Church through the GIRM section cited above reminds us that if we happen to find ourselves at Mass a second time in a day we may receive but this rule also guards against making the Eucharist “ordinary” or “common, as with food” which it is not (and excessive receiving would be an abuse of this God-given gift).

Canon Law:

Can. 917 A person who has already received the Most Holy Eucharist can receive it a second time on the same day only within the eucharistic celebration in which the person participates, without prejudice to the prescript of ⇒ can. 921, §2.

Can. 921 §1. The Christian faithful who are in danger of death from any cause are to be nourished by holy communion in the form of Viaticum.

§2. Even if they have been nourished by holy communion on the same day, however, those in danger of death are strongly urged to receive communion again.
