How many times does God forgive

OK, heres the deal. How many times does God forgive a person from doing the same thing over and over again. Say drinking, I get it in my head to drink and that’s what I do even though I know I will get drunk and I shouldn’t do it. Or commiting adultry in my heart. I know we are all sinners but does this get any better? Just when I think I am on the right track out the window it goes. Does anybody know what I am talking about or am I alone?

I know how you feel, there was some things I used to do and felt that I just was not getting better. The most important thing I did was to keep going to confession, you need the graces that God gives you through the sacrament to give you the strength to overcome your weaknesses. Sure, in the beginning you might commit the same sins, but you can persevere, get the graces from confession and communion as much as you can. Also I would give up small things that I liked just to strengthen myself to fight the bigger temptations. Keep at it, it will get better!
Oh, and don’t forget your daily prayers, especially the morning prayers, they are very important and give you grace too!

Do keep going to confession. And pray, especially the Litany of the Divine Mercy which I find more reassuring in times of doubt than the Chaplet.

Perhaps look for concrete steps you can take to curb your use of alcohol, and seek the advice of a counsellor or AA.

Yes, going to confession will give many graces. God will always forgive us if we are truely sorry and we are avoiding the places and things that may lead us into temptation to sin. We pray for God to give us strength to do the things that will lead us to a healthy enviornment and people who help us be holy. We have to make changes sometimes like associating with others who want to lead a good christian life .

Pray unceasingly and be persistant in doing God’s will.

Thanks for all the replies! I will take them to heart. LilyM I am an alcoholic but only drink when my wife is away ( which isn’t often ) but when she is gone I do drink in excess which I know is bad. I do go to counseling for it and have brought it up in confession, it is just that I keep repeating the same pattern over and over again. Via333 I will try the giving up smaller things I enjoy and see how that works.

How often should I forgive my neighbour? Jesus was once asked Seven times? Not seven, Jesus answered, but seventy-seven. This is a reflection of God’s love for us.

When you confess a sin, you are (or at least you should be, if you are being granted absolution) making a promise to do your best to try to do that sin again. So long as that is true, you can be forgiven a million times, but I doubt it will get that far.

God is very forgiving, but one should never take His Great Mercy for granted. Jesus told us to be prepared because your last day comes to you like a thief, and you don’t want to die unprepared.

My brother, it does get better! Keep on praying and confessing, and really hand it over to Jesus. He will comfort you and strengthen you. our Blessed Mother is also very good for this, particularly against committing adultery in the heart.
