How many times would it take for your pastor to preach hate for you to leave?

Don’t you think you are overstating things there? Opinionated posts do not equal hate. People might sound abrasive and judgemental, but I don’t think they are hateful, just lacking in Christian charity. There IS a difference.

I don’t know about you, but I see some really hateful posts here. Like telling someone that they are sick and they will pray for them. I saw that one last night. Or what about the guy who said if he couldn’t go to mass in latin he wouldn’t go at all?

If I were to hear, say, a sermon similar to one that is prominent in the news these days, I wouldn’t go back. In fact, I’d probably leave during the sermon. There is absolutely no way that particular sermon could be misunderstood. And if my fellow churchgoers were cheering the pastor?

But otherwise, I’d agree with the posters who said that they would give the pastor a second chance, on the assumption that perhaps there was a misunderstanding.

I was bothered by how many were listening to that “sermon” and were applauding and encouraging more of it. Now, that is a real problem. I guess they wanted their kids to hear the “truth”.

Some would say that is hateful. IMHO I think he has more backbone than many in the Church. He is doing nothing wrong while he is steadfast in his example to others.

And his homilies often deal with the reality of sin, the need for the Eucharist and confession, not hate.

I am wondering how a priest could go 40 years and never say mass in english, unless he is in a different country? Or is he in a monastery or something like that? Just wondering.

I think it is ok to hate sin, but is it really ok to hate mass in english so much that you avoid it for 40 years?

Yes, he is at a Shrine. He does not “hate” English. He preaches in English of course. But at 92, and still celebrating the Mass, he is stubborn, crotchity, opinionated and more

Regardless, he has a deep love and appreciation for the the Mass of the Church which was never abrogated. He continues to offer it to many who love and appreciated this more stable liturgy. That is, a liturgy that he cannot change or redesign at will.

Perhaps that is what he might “hate”… the at-will redesign we have seen occur so often these past 40 years.

Such ideas are the anti-thesis of Catholic values.

Here, and I thought we were supposed to be Christians. Didn’t Jesus say something about forgiving seven times seventy times? And isn’t that a Hebraic euphemism for “until hell freezes over?”

I agree with this. Although instead of leaving that parish and never return, I pray that I would have the strength to go to the priest and talk to him about his remarks, to the bishop, etc. I would do what I could to encourage the priest to change his viewpoints and apologize for his words. If he was not willing to do that and the bishop was not willing to take action then yes I would have to leave that parish. Although as others have stated, I would NEVER leave my faith.

Also, if I happened to miss that Mass and I had heard from others that a priest said those type of hate words. I would seek as much clarification as possible and would again go to the priest and bishop. I would not use the excuse I was not there at that Mass to hear what he said so I can just ignore it until it effects me personally.

If other members of my parish were cheering this type of hate speach, I think I would be on my knees in prayer and tears for a LONG time!! At that point I would probably do my best to talk to any and everyone above my priest all the way up to the Pope!!

Something like the unspoken real sermon implicitly referred to? (racial hatred). Once. Time for a new parish. Of course, that might not be necessary since unlike some faith communities, catholic pastors are bound to obey their bishops and bishops tend to respond quite fast to things that publicly embarrass them.
