  • type 1: know existence of God, but hate Him.
  • type 2: deny existence of God.
Is there such type 1?

Type 1 wouldn’t really be atheism because you still believe in God, you just choice to hate him.

From what I know, there is weak and strong atheism, but that’s something different.

Type 1 would actually be bona-fide devil worshipers.

Atheism comes in two flavors: strong atheism (‘there is no God’) and weak atheism (‘I have no reason to believe there is a God’). The former is logically indefensible, much as theism is; the latter, as a negative logical statement, puts the burden of proof on one who would show otherwise either way.

Weak atheism is quite similar to plain ol’ agnosticism, and is much more common.

There is the type that denies the God of the Bible while holding out for the possibility of another god or gods. I would not consider them agnostic, because many of them do not consider themselves as such.

There is what some call “practical atheists” where they believe God exists but act as if He didn’t. Some people who knowns in their hearts that God exists but denies it to suit their comfort. Like a criminal knowing there is a law but refuses to be under it.

There are also logical atheists. I do not find evidence of God existance. Ethical atheists. There is evil in the world so God is either not all powerful or not all loving. Actually is more a argument for deism that for atheism. I fell into that cathegory for long time there is a First Cause God but he does not care about us so why we should care about Him?

That’s the type of atheist mentioned in Ps. 14:1–“The fool hath said in his heart, ‘There is no God…’” In the Old Testament times, atheism as we know it didn’t exist, and the psalmist was referring to people who lived their lives as though God did not exist.

Richard Wurmbrand (founder of Voice of the Martyrs) used to say in his discussions with atheist Communists in his homeland of Rumania that there were two kinds of atheists–those who denied the existence of God, and said that therefore they could do all the evil that they wanted to, and there would be no judgment; and those who said that because there is no God, there is no one to do good; therefore, I must do the good that God would do, if he existed.

I see three kinds of atheists–1) those who have made a complete examination of the entire universe and have been unable to find God anywhere; 2) those who are making a statement of faith that God doesn’t exist and are hoping that their statement is true; and 3) those who are simply parroting what someone else has told them. Since #1 is impossible, that puts professing atheists into either category #2 or category #3.

They would also not consider themselves atheists, I would think. For instance, I do not believe that the God of the Christians is the only one there is. I am a polytheist, not an atheist, though you could describe me as an “amonotheist”, I suppose.

Sorry, I did not clarify that. No, you are not an atheist. I should have been more specific. They do not accept the Abrahamic God, and if provided with reasons for others, they will not accept them either. It is a combative form of Atheism that I first encountered as an undergrad. They claim that other gods may exist, but you cannot convence them that they do. Seems contradictory to me

I see, that helps. So, if you know that they do not consider themselves agnostics, do you know how these folks you encountered do define themselves? I am guessing not atheist or there would not be the feeling of contradiction.

You know, it seems like they fluctuated. It has been almost 8 years since I spoke to any of them. They were atheist, but they generally called themselves agnostic if the room wasn’t friendly. I think that they held the position because anti-Biblical God was easier or more expected. They would only deny others when pressed. I know that one of them “converted” to Wicca, but that was a decision based on a love interest, not a matter of faith.

I’ll see if I can get in touch with a couple of them to see if I can get a more clear explination.
