How Mark Ruffalo & 'Spotlight' badly affected my life

Godforever87:
The way Mark Ruffalo promoted it was especially difficult for me. The day of the Academy Awards was really tough because he protested at a church on Sunday, which the day to respect God according to the Ten Commandments.
I hope you will examine your expectations of this or any actor to respect your feelings about something. He doesn’t know you, he doesn’t owe you that.
Remember the scene in the movie Ever After, where Drew Barrymore’s character runs out of the castle after her stepmother exposes her and she cries in the pouring rain feeling like all was lost. That was how I felt.
I feel sad for you that you felt this way. Not because of a celebrity’s actions, but that you are affected by them in this way. It isn’t healthy or typical of fans. He is an entertainer but he has his own life and his own values. If you can’t separate his activism from his craft, then you should be able to not follow his as a fan anymore without becoming so distressed. For the time being I’d avoid his work and anything related to avoid the distress you are feeling but I’d also seek help to overcome the unhealthy what-ever-it-is. Even if you watch wholesome shows, or reading wholesome books, someone is likely to fall short of your expectations if those expectations are not reasonable. You should be able to enjoy things without becoming distressed or if you don’t like something, shake the dust from you feet because what you described is way more emotion, thought and energy than it deserves. In a situation like this I wouldn’t even recommend praying for that person and instead add him to a prayer list at a monastery and not think on it again until you can manage not to become overwrought. Please take care.
When the film won the Academy Award for Best Picture I really did feel that was the beginning of the end of the Catholic Church, especially after his protest received lots of attention. I thought that the majority of America would leave the church as a result of these events. I really do blame my high-functioning Autism on this. However, it was one the lowest rated telecasts in history and Open Road Films had to apologize for falsely portraying Jack Dunn as someone who was part of the Boston Archdiocesan cover-up. I never really cared for Ruffalo as an actor. My dislike for him really began when he said back in 2013 that he was glad that his mother had an abortion. However, there is lots of pro-life movement happening in our country and my church is still strong. I will remember that holding a huge grudge is not healthy and all of that is in the past.

I would also like to share this article about the Conservative Catholic voice-actor Jim Cummings, whom I mentioned earlier. I haven’t met him yet but I do hope to some day because he did numerous cartoons that I grew-up with.

The gates of hell will not prevail against the Catholic Church, so I don’t expect a movie will.

The movie was depicting a dark time for the Catholic Church in the U.S. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It sounds like they took some artistic license with at least one of the people being portrayed. That is certainly unfortunate, but it is not the death knell for the Church in America.

You’re concerned about the attention, but honestly, just because you were paying attention to it does not mean that the majority of people were paying attention to it. I heard of the movie before it came out, but I didn’t even realize that it won Best Picture until you brought it up in this thread. Most people were talking about Trump back at Oscars time and (as you said) the ratings were down. Now, it is but a distant memory for most people.

I realize that autism can lead to fixating on certain things (my son has autism). And it seems you realize that the autism is playing in to how this movie has effected you. I would encourage you to try to redirect your attention to holy pursuits as much as possible. That’s why I recommended the lives of the saints. There are a wealth of great stories with the saints, and we don’t have to worry about them bad-mouthing the Church or supporting things that are contrary to our moral values. 👍

I just watched it last night. The essentials are fact and we have to own that. Most disturbing was how these crimes and cover ups where some how tolerated, not just by the Church but by lawyers while many ignored or looked the other way. That boggles my mind but it shows how powerful a culture and an institution can be.

Sure, Hollywood is anti-Catholic and basically decadent. That does not mean we do not have to acknowledge reality and try to do something about it…

My brother wanted to go see Thor: Ragnarok today because he had time off and no one else wanted to go with him. I went because I wanted to be a good brother. He didn’t really know much about Spotlight, but I had told him about it and Ruffalo’s actions during the car ride home. Before I go into detail of what today’s experience was like here’s what Ruffalo and members of the creative team did back in 2016 that really affected me and my high-functioning Autism.

On IMDB message boards, which have now thankfully been shut down, I posted that I was boycotting the Oscars because of what he had done and how I thought he was disrespecting one of the Ten Commandments, which was “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” People said I was overreacting and there was nothing wrong what he has was doing because he was standing with those who had been sexually abused. On Twitter, I wrote him a message and called him a monster. He didn’t reply and I don’t think he cared what I said if he even bothered to read it. Looking back that wasn’t the best thing of me to do because I needed to remember to hate the sin not the sinner.

As for today at first, it was difficult to see Ruffalo’s face on the big screen for the first time in two years after all the things he had done that badly affected me. However, I remembered a sermon a priest gave the other week about how not holding a huge grudge towards someone can make you a better person. I also remembered Father Robert Barron’s review of the 2015 Cinderella film and how it was Christian like of the lead character to forgive someone after all of the terrible things that they did.

I also recalled how I decided to forgive someone who had cyber-bullied me back in 2008. It was hard at first, but after speaking to a Jesuit man he said that constantly harboring ill-will feelings towards someone wasn’t good for me. I was at peace after I had forgiven the bully. So, I forgive Ruffalo for all the things he might’ve done which upset me. That doesn’t mean I have to like him or see his projects, but forgiving him is the right thing to do.

With Thanksgiving happening tomorrow I am thankful that God loves me and I have a very supportive family and a group of friends who are always there for me. I also have a great job and terrific group of co-workers and that truly is what is most important in my life.

I don’t think you should obsess about those actors even those who actively show that they promote that movie’s agenda.
Actors by definition have a profession based on accepted deceit and lying. In the middle ages they weren’t even allowed in churches. Today they are accepted because the subject of certain art they create has Christian meaning.
We are all a bit autistic, ADHD, paranoid etc but we function well when this doesn’t become a disorder. Some psychologists claim all we can do is avoid triggering these affections to become a disorder, when we can no longer control our mind. If I were you I would take some time off from the Hollywood contemplation. And definitely off Mark Ruffalo (he’s cute though, but 😭 too much into politics).
