How Marriage Will Change

If, like me, you have wondered how the normalization of “gay marriage” will affect marriage, this article may interest you. It is a speculative prediction by Mark Regnerus who has been studying this subject for some time.

The sexual permissiveness of men will emerge a winner in the contest of ideas as same-sex marital norms begin to shape the larger institution of marriage.

Many libertarians and conservatives, including Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron, assert that marriage is a conservative institution—which is true—one that will therefore function as such for those who enter it, whether gay or straight. While certainly the case for some, that claim is an unlikely future for many, not because gay or lesbian couples are liberal but because those in the driver’s seat of the contemporary mating market—men—are permissive. This, I predict, will be same-sex marriage’s signature effect on the institution—the institutionalization of monogamish as an acceptable marital trait. No, gay men can’t cause straight men to cheat. Instead, the legitimacy newly accorded their marital unions spells opportunity for men everywhere to bend the boundaries.

Marriage has changed for the worse long ago before this was even an issue. It started to change for the worse due to many reasons, many years ago. There isn’t any one reason it changed for the worse. I myself will not use any one reason or line of thinking as the sole scapegoat for the downward spiral marriage has been taking for the past 50 years.

Divorce for petty reasons, annulments made oh so easy to get, refusal of couples to engage in counseling to save and strengthen a marriage having troubles, the throw away mentality as in it’s not worth saving just divorce and be done with it, teen pregnancies, failure of Christian parents to set an example as in sending their children to Catholic school but rarely attending Mass.

Yes, this new reason is another knock on marriage but it’s no greater or worse a threat than hundreds of other reasons.

Permissive culture, MTV, Madonna with Catholic parents permitting their teen girls to buy her music and even dress like her, so very many threats over so many years to marriage. Wives finding hubs porn stash and worse yet their sons stash and not confronting them with the attitude boys will be boys and thinking it normal or even healthy.

Lots of threats to marriage which were left alone or marginalized as no big deals. Now it’s all added up and it’s not too late but we have much work to do to repair what we, our parents and grandparents didn’t tend to.

A disturbing trend in my parish is the teen girls and how they dress and the makeup. Some look like prostitutes. This would never have happened when I was young in my parish and if it did either the priest, deacon or someone would have made a phone call to the mother, same day or no later than next day.

There isn’t any one sole reason for this mess.

It’s an interesting article, and certainly worth a read. No doubt that legalization of same sex marriage will pull the institution further down the path of instability. In nations with same sex marriage, lesbian couples divorce at the highest rates, followed by male couples, with heterosexual couples at the lowest rates.

And same sex marriage partners, according to the article, seem to have more permissive attitudes about adultery. Fidelity is less important to them. These attitudes will pull the whole institution in the same direction.

It’s certainly the case that same sex ‘marriage’ is simply one more symptom of an institution in an advanced state of collapse rather than the primary cause. The deconstruction of marriage got its biggest push from the social acceptance of contraception, which then enabled the sexual revolution, with increasing rates of fornication, out of wedlock births, abortion, fatherless families, and crumbling family structures.

So one can’t blame the collapse of marriage on SSM. But it will certainly speed up the collapse.

That infection needs to be cured and can be. One person at a time if need be.

That is called feminism. When I was in public school the feminist philosophy was so prevalent even in middle school. That is called feminism. When I was in public school the feminist philosophy was so prevalent even in middle school.
