How much alms should a youth give to the poor?

I am still in high school and have weekly allowance. I don’t spend much, except on food and stuff that I like. Usually, at the end of the week I still have at least $20 to spare before getting my next weekly allowance. Should I use this $20 to give alms? Or what would be a good amount?

The official stance is to give what you can. Some things you may want to factor in are savings for thing like college. Back in the old days, 10% of one’s income was required (no longer required) so that may help you figure out a good amount.

I second the idea of using 10% as a guideline.

I think 10% is a good guideline, but adjust as your circumstances allow.

My kids give about 25% of their allowance, but that’s just because that’s an easy way for me to divvy up the coins (they’re 5 and 3 and get dimes and nickels for small tasks around the house.) Our “house rule” is 50% spending, 25% saving, and 25% giving.

Now would be a really great time for you to learn how to budget if you haven’t already. You won’t have as many spending categories as someone who lives independently, but it would be good preparation for when you do. 👍

Hmm 10% sounds like a good idea 🙂 thank you!

That sounds like a great idea actually. Instead of just spending and giving, saving some would definitely be helpful especially for the future. Thank you! 🙂

Start a retirement account.
LOA! I like this comment! But I think 10 to 15 % would be a good goal. Anything left over at the end of your “payday” could be used for a good cause, if you can do so. You are so fortunate to have the allowance whereas so many have so very little. Peace and prayers.

I would second saving as much as you can for college. If you don’t, student loans may turn into a “necessary evil” and then YOU will be the poor. Trust me we know from experience! 😊

Maybe give mostly of time for now until you make it through school. Youthful energy and strength is always needed at your Parish and various other charities and ministries. 🙂

Certainly give some when you can, but if you’re saving for college, 10% might be a little high.
