How much did the devil know?

The Devil had access to the scriptures. But as we know, the Jews did not understand the scriptures when it came to the messiah and neither did the devil. The devil is very smart but his intelligence is still twisted by his sin. I think he knew that Jesus was someone who was very special to God, but he did not know he was God until he tested him. Jesus allowed himself to be tested by the devil, so He obviously wanted the devil to know who He was at this point or at least to have a better understanding of how powerful he was. The devil and demons had a role to play (the devil entered Judas etc) so Jesus was letting him know what he needed to know in order for that role to be fulfilled.
The reason I even started this thread was because I was having a discussion with an evangelical who made it seem that the Devil always knew who Jesus was, and then, of course, I remembered Matthew’s passage, so I wanted some answers. This is a good answer. Thanks.

In fact I think it is true that the devil always knew who Jesus was because since he was born he was trying to kill him. The account goes that the three wise men asked Herod where was born the King of the Jews… and then you know the story:

" Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth and slew all the children who were in Bethlehem and in all the region thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently inquired of the wise men." (Mt 2:1-19)But by then already Joseph and Mary with the child fled to Egypt until Herod’s death.

Even in The Book of Revelation ch. 12 we read that Satan was waiting for the woman to give birth to the child to devour her child as soon as he was born, which is a figure of what happen. But the child was taken up to heaven…

Hope this helps, but many thanks to put the question…

There is a distinction that needs to be made. Satan always knew Jesus was ‘special’ to God, what he did not know is if Jesus was God in the flesh.
Also, in the book of revelation, the symbol is two fold. It symbolizes Mary and Jesus but it also symbolizes The Church and her Members. Mary gives birth to Jesus and also to each one of us as a member of Christ’s body (the Church). Mary did not cry out in pain when she gave birth to Jesus because she had no original sin so there is your clue that it is not strictly talking about the birth of Jesus. The Fathers read this passage primarily as having to do with the Church. newadvent.org/fathers/0712.htm

Sorry, but I did not try to give here and interpretation of ch. 12 (this is not the thread) but just to justify that Satan wanted to kill the child from the beginning. And of course I said that the woman and her child was just a ‘figure’.

But many thanks for the explanation.
If you want to see about ch. 12 interpretation you could go here…

In the Old Testiment, “son of God” was a label given to holy prophets and other holy men. These people could perform miracles as well, and one of them rose a person back to life. It could well be that this is what they thought of Jesus as some sort of holy man of God with special powers being God’s embassary. But the demons were not sure just exactly what his strength and position was since it dosen’t seem to have been revealed to them. But they did know that he was a “son of God” person by witnessing his power.

In Matthew 4: 3-11, when Jesus was being tempted by the devil in the desert, he says:

"If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread. But He answered, it is written: ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes form the mouth of God.’

The devil continues to tempt the Lord to no avail while Jesus never lets on that He is the Son of God. My question is, was this an attempt by the devil to figure out if Jesus was truly the Messiah or was he just playing around with Jesus, i.e., knowing He was the Son of God but tempting Him all the same to see what He would do. I assume that the devil was not privy to the details of man’s redemption via the cross( because not even the Jews, as a whole, were aware that this was how the Messiah would redeem the world). So, I’m curious to know how much did the devil actually know (before the resurrection)? What is there in Scripture or Tradition that would help us?
According to Ven. Mary of Agreda’s Mystical City of God, the book of private revelation written about the life of the BVM, and promoted by several holy popes, Satan only knew that Jesus Christ was the Son of God at the time of His death on the Cross. According to Ven. Mary of Agreda, Satan had always sought the true Messiah in order to somehow destroy Him. God bless you.

The Devil knew well, probably even that he would fail, but what else is
he supposed to do? Ever since his Fall, Evil is the only thing the Devil
has left. He rejected God, God case him away, now he wants nothing
more now than to hurt God anyway he can, even at least make Jesus
feel temptation (which I’m sure he felt ‘some temptation’), but he never
would do the Devil’s inner most desires.

You think the ancient Jews were smarter as as smart as the Devil? I may take back what
I said about the Devil knowing he would lose, maybe he was that arrogant, “Maybe I can
still win this,” he might have thought. When Jesus announced to the Apostles that when
he goes to Jerusalem, he will be rejected, and killed, Peter rebuked him, “No, don’t you
go then!” and Jesus said, “Get behind my Satan,” so I believe the Devil knew well what
Jesus was supposed to do, so he tried to stop him.

Well the Devil may have known that God had a plan, whether the Devil thought he was
smarter is a mystery. He knows a lot, he definitely tried to stop Jesus through Peter. I
would cite then Matthew 16:22-23 & Mark 8:32-33.

All in all though, if I had to take a lucky guess, at this point, he knows it all, but with
nothing else to do, having nothing left but anger and hate, will take it out as often as
he can on us, through us, all because he hates the God who cast him away forever.
The bible even admits that not many people will make it to heaven, so in a way, Satan IS GOING TO win, in the fact he will have managed to corrupt and turn the majority of Gods children against him, imo, that sounds alot like ‘winning’

Just because more people go to Hell doesn’t mean the devil wins. God’s Justice wins when people go to hell and his mercy wins when people go to heaven. God wins.

I read the City of God concerning the Transfixtion. The question came to mind: If Satan knew that Jesus Christ to be the Son of God would he have incited the Jews to crucify Him.
In Holy Scripture it is stated that Jesus was like us except in sin, I believe it is mentioned several times. We understand that Satan has dominion over us because of sin, and Jesus came to redeem us from his works of evil. Satan also knew he had no power over a sinless person It was a God-given right for him to rule over sinful men . Jesus , God-man assumed our human nature except for sin. Satan blinded by his own arrogant pride couldn’t possibly conceive how God could humble Himself and become man. Satan himself couldn’t humble himself before God. So he incited the Jews , the leaders of the people to envy , jealousy, and hatred. No doubt that Satan knew that Jesus was a holy man, but never God . He knew that if he destroyed an innocent, and especially God-man that his rule over man would end. It is understood that he didn’t realize this until sometime before the Crucifixion. He tried to have Judas change the minds of the Pharasees, but they were so incited with hatred of Christ that Satan couldn’t change their minds. Satan can incite to sin, but not to good. Gods’ humility and love blinded Satan Since Jesus was God-man,His merits were eternal which He could apply to all who turn to Him for salvation. Satan lost all of his rights to rule over men when He crucified Christ, because Jesus was without sin, a just man. Satan still rules over sinners who haven’t turned to Christ, and he can still work through the weaknesses of of those that have. I often wondered what was the test that caused Satan to fall. I thought that as a Holy and Pure spirit, Lucifer, the barer of Light next to the throne of God knew that he could never compete against God, his Creator. Suppose that God made known to him, that a woman, a human being would be his Queen, then I can see where he would not submit out of pride. Mary is known as the Queen of Angels. Angels are superior to humans, they are pure spirits, we are part spirit and flesh. Jesus said as the Jews approached Him to crucify Him. He said the prince of this world comes, but he has no power over me. Jesus for love of us laid down His life willingly, no body took it from Him. What an Awsome God we have in Jesus. He roped a dope thats’ what pride does to one, we become dopes. …and you will lie in wait for her heel to crush you. Jesus keep you.🙂

You bring up a good point, Satan KNEW the power of God, he did not have the rely on faith as we do, he has stood right beside the throne of God, knowing this, and he still did what he did, kind of suggests to me it could be possible, God IS NOT all powerful, as we tend to believe…I know its a harsh statement, but what else could explain what Satan did? If God was truly all powerful, Satan would know this and also know it would be futile for him to even attempt to ‘take over’.

I certainly do believe God is all powerful though, so it is my opinion, God created satan and intended for satan to do what he did. after all, if satan did not fall, and did not tempt mankind, there really would be no choices for us, or there would be no ‘evil’ and we would all be robots.

I’m not infallible, so I’m open for correction, all I can give you is my limited judgement trusting
God blesses us all with His truth. There isn’t a single doubt about Gods’ power, love and knowledge, because He is the Creator, and He is all of these things, God is Power, love and truth. All of reality takes its total existence from God. Without Him nothing was made, nothing existed. Satans knowledge comes from God and as much knowledge that God wants him to have. With that knowledge He gave Satan, all of the angels, and all humans free will, to be like Him. All of this is a gift from God. For us to have God, to deserve Him we must make a choice between His gifts or Himself. Satan was gifted very highly., next to the throne of God. Satan beheld his own beauty and power that came from God. he owed his very existence to God. When God provided a test for Satans’ free will Satan beheld the glory that God bestowed on him, instead of owing God his complete allegiance and gratitude, love and adoration he refused to give God what was His, he chose his will over Gods’ will, when he should have rightly and justly chose God’s will. At that point Jesus said he saw Satan fall like lightening from the sky. St. Thomas Aquinas stated that an angels’ will is like Gods, immutable, also Satan didn’t act out of ignorance, but pride, a false estimation of himself. Since his will is immutable, unchanging he could not repent and ask God for mercy such was his greatness God because He is God could forgive him, Satan would never ask for forgiveness. We on the other hand are so weak, we make a lot of mistakes but God in His love and compassion for us forgives us when we ask for forgiveness. Our wills are not immutable, praise the Lord. We can refuse, we have that freedom, choose God, or ourselves which will it be.🙂

Look at the bible verse where God/Jesus admits he has no power over the chariot, because it was made of iron (paraphrasing this verse btw)…how do you explain that?

God is also the ONLY one who can give Satan his continued power and access to mankind, Why does Satan and his demons even have the abilities they do? If Hell is their place of torment and punishment, then why can they come and go freely from there, as they can enter our realm here and there? doesnt sound like much of a prison to me!

Also, if they have the will and desire to constantly torment mankind, and focus on that, then it would imply they themselves are NOT currently suffering, otherwise, I would think they would be more concerned with their own torment and suffering versus spending each day trying to torment and tempt mankind?

Look at any POW, being tortured…do they spend all their time trying to torture and torment others? NO, they are too consumed with their own well being, and dealing with their own torture and suffering…this makes me think Satan and his demons are not suffering in anyway right now, as it seems they treat hell as their own ‘headquarters, or base of operations’.

Looks’ like God is hounding you (The Hound of Heaven) I noticed that your religion :raised Catholic which leads me to believe that you are not necessarily converted. You see things from a purely human perspective or a secular one. But you still show interest in knowing about the Faith. To help you understand some of the questions you ask you would have to accept the Catholic Churchs’ guidance, her Christ given authority. You will find apparent contradictions and you won’t be able to understand if you don’t have the grace of Faith. I believe that you need a personal encounter with your Savior (where your at spiritually) before you have a resolution to some of your questions. I assume you were Baptized, but not evangelized. Parents can’t pass on the Faith, that is a gift from Jesus, and Him alone. Parents can pass on the truths of the Faith, and they can live good Christian lives. Only this encounter can bring all of the truths of the faith to fruition and,be assimilated. All anybodys’ efforts to convince someone about the Faith will fail. I’m afraid any answer I give will be over-ruled by your judgement. I can’t convert only Jesus can. Its my desire for you that you will turn to Jesus humbly and receiving, because He put His Hand on you when you were Baptized. What a blessing, praise the Lord. You don’t have to believe me, after all who am I but you do have to believe Jesus and you should know who He is.🙂

You are somewhat right, Yes, I was raised in a catholic household and went to a catholic school up until 7th grade, my parents forced me to attend church when I was younger, but it did not interest me then, I was baptized and confirmed in 7th grade, but shortly after, I went to public school and started running with friends I had there, started doing drugs and other immoral things back then too. As I got older though, I learned my parents were for the most part, just going thru the motions at the catholic church, and they could not answer many of the questions I had about the bible, and did not even know about many things I brought up, so this made me think they were just ‘fair weather/good feelings, catholics’.

I am 38 yrs old now, and while Im not fully catholic, I do take an interest in learning more about God and life in general. Im a bit on the fence when it comes to religion, there is alot of things that do not make sense to me, and at the same time, I do 100% believe God created everything here, and was born here and died for our sins, so I do believe God is our salvation, just other aspects of it that make me wonder about the true nature of things.

Not really applicable to this thread, but I have a deep interest in UFO/alien life, I believe God created life on other planets and they are just more of Gods creation, I do not believe the aliens created us like some people do though. Its kinda like I believe most of what the bible says, but I am more interested in learning everything the bible does not talk about, like why God created other planets and life there as well, how he interacts with those beings on other planets, their purpose, etc. In other words, I take an interest in the BIG picture concerning God and all his creations.

I’m very pleased that you have read the Mystical City of God. Thank you for your post. Satan *very highly suspected *that Jesus was God/the Messiah a little before the crucifixion and thus tried to dissuade Judas and the others from having Him killed, but Satan did not know *for sure *that Jesus was God/the Messiah until His death on the Cross, that is, according to Ven. Mary of Agreda in the Mystical City of God. All throughout Jesus’ life Satan had suspicions about Jesus possibly being the Godman/Messiah, according to Ven. Mary of Agreda. God bless you.

Many Catholics have been processed but not evangelized (an ecounter with Jesus) through no fault of their own, God allowed it for His Own beautiful reasons. We have to learn that the Grace of Faith comes from Jesus alone. It is the Fathers’ will that His Son be recognized for who He is. That why the Encounter must take place before we experience the full release of the Spirit in our lives. Many Popes have said the Encounter is necessary. Isaiah the prophet told Ahaz, king of Judah, Ask for a sign from the Lord, your God, let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the sky! But Ahaz answered, "I will not tempt the Lord! Then he said: Listen O house of David! Is it not enough for you to weary men, must you weary my God? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign; the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and shall name Him Emmanuel. If Jesus gave His everything, His love, His life, His suffering to unite us to Him why do we treat Him like we do to ordinary people. Being God we can ask for a sign if we desire to know Him, I know for a fact He will answer. We in this case are
not tempting Him, but seeking to know Him. (the Encounter) Pray, and open our hearts and minds.
The sighting of UFO are suspected to be paranormal manifestations, and knowing what I know am in full agreement. I have dealt with the paranormal on several occasions using the Name of Jesus. I also made it public, suggesting to the Program thats Incredible to do the same. There is much of the paranormal going on in the public now. If God would reveal to us the existence of angels, don’t you think if there were other intelligent beings out there that He would reveal that too.? Every christian has the competence to use the Holy Name of Jesus in a simple exorcism, but not in a diabolical possession. The Church warns they could get hurt. One has to be humble and holy and prayerful. We can use Holy Water, the Crucifix, and Prayer. The church leaves diabolical possessions to ordained Priests.👍

Over the years, I have asked and asked to receive a sign from God that I may know him, but to this day…absolutely nothing…?? I even asked when I was a young child for God to come into my heart, since I went to catholic school and heard alot of others talk about God and the feelings they experienced, I could not understand, as I did not ever feel anything, and to this day, still have not.

Its definitely not a matter of desire, I have a very strong desire to know God, but when he consistently does not answer, it tends to make one wonder what is true and what is not.

God told us about angels, because they are in heaven with him and serve a ‘Godly’ purpose, I can understand why God did not inform us of intelligent life elsewhere in the universe…it would not really matter, as those beings are just more of Gods creations, nothing more, nothing less, but since they are reported to have the ability to come here, it is clear they are much more advanced than we are, so IMO, this suggests they have been around a bit longer than we have, and really, that is possible, with God anything is possible.

We know for a fact our God is one who loves to create, so I dont think its much of a stretch to think he was creating other planets with life (but different than ours) long before he created us. If one was to suggest earth was the ONLY planet where God created life, plus knowing God is one who loves to create…what did God do for the billions upon billions of years of his existence prior to us being created? It is hard to imagine God just ‘sat around’ doing nothing, and having NO creations to look upon. That is almost silly to suggest!

If you look at mankind from a different perspective, we are progressing slowly with technology, but eventually, likely in the next 100-200 years, we will have the ability to travel far into space, and probably visit other planets, so in that case…WE could be the aliens, if that planet had life that was lower on the technology totem pole. Travel to other planets and even other systems is just a matter of having the technology, given enough years and decades, mankind, or any other beings created out there, will gain technology making it possible for them to do such things.

I believe the bible does ‘hint’ at other life out there…I have heard one verse where God speaks of his ‘other flocks’ he must tend to.

Satan is the god of this world. I will argue that Satan knew full well who Jesus Christ was and his purpose.

The true Heaven above God is much more distant. And Jesus Christ shown us the way…

The most important part of Satan’s temptations (to me anyway). Satan offered him the world if only he would worship him.

Mathew 4:8-11.

8
Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence,
9
and he said to him, “All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me.”
10
At this, Jesus said to him, “Get away, Satan! It is written: ‘The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.’”
11
Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him.

“The devil knew Jesus was God” - It is ok to think this. But, when I read the New Testament, Jesus and God were ONE. Jesus was the son of God. Not the same as “Jesus is God“. However, because Jesus and God were so close, Jesus might as well be God for most people - and this is OK.

John Chapter 17. Very important! Well, the entire New Testament of Jesus Christ is Important.

1
When Jesus had said this, he raised his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you.

11
And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are.

21
so that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.

22
And I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one,

23
I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me.

24
Father, they are your gift to me. I wish that where I am they also may be with me, that they may see my glory that you gave me, because you loved me before the foundation of the world.

I will argue that when Jesus Christ made his presence on earth, all hell broke loose. And Satan and his demons also were present in force…

Very good. Beat me to it.

Luke 4:31-37.

31
Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath,
32
and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority.
33
In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice,
34
“Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are - the Holy One of God!”
35
Jesus rebuked him and said, “Be quiet! Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm.
36
They were all amazed and said to one another, “What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.”
37
And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.
