How much do you contribute to the church?

There are many moral rules for the donation to the church. 1% to 10% which ever is comfortable to the donor.
Here in India, we have
  • monthly subscripton
  • Annual Feast subscription
  • Offerings
  • Other donations to some feasts like Christmas, Easter etc.
Some are generous, but some find excuses for avoiding offering. But according to me when we generously donate, we will definitely blessed with more.

*For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. *
Luke 25:29

I would look at it - as the talents which God has given to us and the money we earn from those talents - should be used for the Glory of God. The one who gives more, will be awarded more.

What are all your experiences in donation?

Can. 222 §1. The Christian faithful are obliged to assist with the needs of the Church so that the Church has what is necessary for divine worship, for the works of the apostolate and of charity, and for the decent support of ministers.

My family has always given 10% - and sometimes we split it. For example: 5% to the Church, and 5% to other charities/causes of our choosing. It can be a personal thing, depending upon your family’s situation, and what you are able to give. We also give in addition on Holy Days as necessary.
 
My pastor suggests 5%. And the other 5% I give to charities of my choice.
 
I wonder how much working for the church counts for? I have been on staff for 10 years and I am finally making what I was making 30 years ago coming out of college.

I believe our service counts for much! The priest assured us of that.

We have tithed for years, as well as giving over 10% and lots of volunteering. But somehow our income keeps creeping lower and lower. We are well below the poverty line now, but we still tithe. Tho we’ve had to drop some very worthwhile charities from our giving list.

Because of the most recent drop in income, we give less than 5% to the Church and more than 5% to charity. Once the child we sponsor (in India!) ages out of the system, we will drop Child Fund and be able to contribute more to the church.

I do wish tithing were as magical as some people believe. 😦
 
The amount that I give to help the Church or donate to help the poor,comes from my Heart. For Jesus told one of the discipline,s, see these men came with their weaith to donate to my fathers house,but this women who came here,gave her last two coin,s ,for that please Jesus more than those who give from their wealth.
 
We just had a homily on this recently. One of our priests suggested 10% for the maintenance/other of the church. He also suggested charity should be additional and to be as generous as possible.
 
70% but I dont have much money so it’s only about 20,000 a year.
 
The problem we are having at our church is that the parishioners can’t stand the priest. Not only are we only averaging only 200 people across all three masses; but the collections are drying up. We used to be able to get 400 people at our 10am mass alone. And our weekend collections were over $10,000! If the Archdiocese does not insist that the order running our church move this priest soon (he’s been here 8 years) our parish will close–and not all of the people in our parish will transfer to another Catholic church. Some are so angry that they will likely leave the Catholic church altogether.
 
We give 10% of our post tax income. It’s split about 50/50 between our parish and other Catholic organizations.

Yes! When the hearts shrink, just the calculative mind works rather than the generous heart. This happens when you give more power to the mind rather the heart where love, care and conscience act together .
 
I’m impressed with the generosity of some of the posters. I truly am.

I don’t actually know how much I contribute as a percentage. I contribute through the year to specific Catholic organizations, then at the end of the year to each of the two parishes we attend, because of the way I receive income from my business. I don’t know whether I have made money or not until the end of the year.

I put it all together to give to my tax preparer at the end of the year, but I have never worked it out as a percentage of income.

I probably should.
 
I give as much as I can but it varies from pay period to pay period. The economy has really cut our business income by almost 40%. Plus we have to drive many miles to church each weekend. So we sort of figure that into our “giving”.
 
This is an interesting topic! I was actually talking to a non-denominational Christian about tithing and giving back to the church just last night.

My family always strives to give at least 5% of what we make to the church. Of course, 10% is a nice percentage of what we make, but because there are a lot of things we are paying for, sometimes it’s a little harder for us. We strongly believe that it’s very important to give back to the Church.

Our last parish received tithes and tithed in return by contributing a certain percentage of tithes collected to rotating local organizations that a parish committee selected each year. I always liked that. Our family used to give 10% consistently – then our finances changed dramatically. We now give less but contribute more via volunteering. Thankfully, there’s always a way to give!
 
I give little for the collection at mass, but that is because I don’t work. My husband is not Catholic and I can’t ask him to put aside money for this. But I will give 10% when I start working, which will hopefully be soon. I really feel strongly about this and know I should do it.

That is definitely one of the best alternatives - contributing our time to spiritual activities. Pray that your finances improve soon.

My family has food, a home, and basic health insurance – we may not have much extra, but we’re beyond blessed. 🙂
