How has EWTN affected your life? Do you watch it often? Watch many programs or just a few? I’m posting my most recent newspaper column (secular newspaper, by the way) about EWTN celebrating its 25th anniversary in the next two or three posts, depending on how it fits.

God bless,

John

EWTN fills a void in Catholic life

“Then I saw another angel flying in midheaven, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and tongue and people.” — Rev. 14:6

On Aug. 15, which is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) kicked off its year-long celebration marking the 25th anniversary of its founding by Mother Mary Angelica. It’s a success story that is truly miraculous.
Now, I understand that the word “miraculous” sometimes is thrown around for things far less deserving. However, in this case, it is a truly well deserved. A Poor Clare nun, Mother Angelica founded in 1981 what has become the largest religious media network in the world. She started it with $200 with a studio in what was supposed to be the monastery’s garage. And she did it as a cloistered nun from Our Lady of the Angels Monastery, which she also founded in Irondale, Alabama, in the heart of the Bible Belt. In addition, the network receives no funds from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops or any other official Catholic Church office or congregation. It’s all by donations.
After Mother Angelica founded the monastery, she began the order’s evangelization efforts by printing their own “mini-books,” which included short teachings on a variety of religious themes. The mini-books led to Mother being asked to speak before audiences, many in churches. Anyone who has seen these recorded talks quickly learn about her dynamic speaking style and her love for Jesus and telling it like it is with a no-nonsense approach. Many of those talks were broadcast on a local television station, but when there was a conflict with the management about some questionable programming at the station, she just left. However, her experiences at the station gave her the idea to start her own station. At the time, a garage was being built on the monastery grounds, but it instead became the first television studio.
I remember she told an interesting story about what was to be broadcast that first evening. Mother had a meeting with a media distributor and asked about a particular religious movie she wanted to kick off the network with on opening night. I don’t remember what movie it was, but she was told that it would cost thousands of dollars for the rights for that one time. She responded that it would be good if he provided the movie for free, that she didn’t have that much money. Mother talked him into it.
When the network started, it was only broadcasting three or four hours in the evening. Her own live show, Mother Angelica Live, was started and most of the programming included material produced elsewhere. From the beginning, Mother made it clear that no pitches for money were allowed on any program. Only on her live show did she ask for financial support at the end, usually asking to “put EWTN between your gas and electric bill.”
Not very long after, the network went to a 24-hour schedule and began producing its own shows, with a few exceptions. When special Catholic events occur, the network covers them very well, from the recent World Youth Day in Germany to the regular meetings of the U.S. Catholic bishops. The coverage of the funeral of Pope John Paul II to the installation of Pope Benedict XVI was outstanding. And of course there is the daily broadcast of the Mass, the Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy and other devotional programming. Since Mother’s second stroke two Christmas Eves ago, her live program, which was aired on Tuesday and Wednesday, is on hiatus. Classic episodes are broadcast on Tuesday. The rest of the weekdays have other live programs at 8 p.m., along with a live program on the encyclicals of JPII on Tuesday at 10 p.m. and Father Benedict Groeschell’s live program on Sunday at 7 p.m.

(To be continued)

(Continued from previous post)

The television portion of EWTN reaches 600 million people in 104 million homes in 114 countries. There is a separate 24-hour operation broadcast in Spanish. EWTN has the largest, privately owned short-wave radio station in the world, reaching around the globe in English and Spanish. There is also a 24-hour radio network, with its own live programming, and a Web site (www.ewtn.com) that, in my opinion, is better than the Vatican site, especially with the huge document and audio library. Live television and radio feeds can be heard at the Web site 24 hours a day. I listen to the radio feed very often since no local radio stations broadcast any EWTN programs, which is a shame. Wonder if anyone will ever start a station around here. Hint! Hint!
Okay, so now you know what EWTN is. What is the secret of its success? To put it in one word, the success is based on “faithfulness” — to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to Pope John Paul II and Benedict XVI, the Magisterium and to the truth. Mother Angelica did not compromise on the official teachings of the Catholic Church, which many times put her in dutch with some bishops, priests, nuns, theologians and lay people. There are plenty of dissenters in the Church — some of them wear collars and habits. Those are the wolves in sheep’s clothing we’ve been warned about. I’ve read about many of them and met a few here and there. Some are very vocal and easily identified, some are a bit sneaky. When you come across one that proposes, insinuates, suggests, opines or flat-out declares that a Catholic Church doctrine can be, may be, could be, should be, ought to be, or will be changed, realize they’re living a delusion, because it ain’t going to happen. And if they earn a salary from the Church, they should, in all honesty, give it back if they’re spreading that garbage.
When EWTN came on the scene, it filled a void that was left after Vatican II when Catholic Church teachings — especially in the United States — were misrepresented or ignored, replaced by some fanciful modern-day “gospel” that promoted disobedience to authentic Church teachings and practices while attempts were made (and still continue) to provide an some false theological opening where abortion, artificial contraception, sex outside of marriage, divorce and remarriage, and homosexuality can or should be acceptable.
Before anyone complains, I do not blame Vatican II. I blame those who decided to ignore Vatican II and come up with their own “spirit of Vatican II” baloney. What we’re left with is a Catholic Church in America where the number of Catholics who go to Sunday Mass regularly (that means EVERY Sunday) and holy days of obligation is less than half what it was before Vatican II. Most American Catholics don’t believe in the Real Presence in the Holy Eucharist, don’t go to confession regularly, if at all, and believe that official teachings can be ignored as long as they’re following their “conscience.” And don’t get me started about liturgical abuses. Pope Benedict is working on his first encyclical that reportedly will be on the liturgy and I can’t wait.
So, at a time when the catechesis of the laity had been twisted or ignored, God provided the faithful with a feisty nun who took true Church teachings and broadcast them around America and the world. God will never let those people who truly seek Him on His terms be abandoned.
These are tough times for believing Catholics, with scandals inside and enemies outside. We need more Mother Angelicas to preach the Word and say it like it is. Jesus said, “If you abide in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed, and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” That’s a truism proven over and over again. Let’s not forget it.

EWTN is a great network that I wish I had here at college in the apartment. When I am at home, though, I like to watch various programs, sometimes even just Mass, because I know it’s worthwhile television.

Please Dont Disturb Me With That Question, I Am Watching Mother Angelica.

(does That Answer Your Question???)

I apologize. Pardon my intrusion. I hope I’m not disturbing you any further with my apologize. If so, I apologize for that, too.

It’s great. Watch it all the time. 👍 Their WYD coverage was really good.

Well, I know his heart is in the right place. But, the majority of the crowd around here doesn’t put much stock in encyclicals.

What I think we need after the “year of the Eucharist” is over is the Decade of the Catechism. And, make Fr. Corapi the Apostle of the Catechism.

I watch it as much as my time will allow. It is so nice to hear the truth on TV for all to hear!

God’s Blessings,
Ann

I love EWTN and I love Mother Angelica. When she was interviewed on their 25th anniversary program, I was brought to tears to see this beautiful nun unable to express herself due to her strokes. She truly saved my life. my mom wrote to her about me. I haven’t been to Church in years and my mom asked Mother to pray for me. Mother sent a letter to my mom saying that in one week I would go back to church. I knew nothing about this interaction, but before that week was over I had a feeling to run to Mass, which I did, cried my eyes out to the priest, and the rest is history. I am back and so happy. “Your mother wears COMBAT BOOTS!”

“Mary was good enough for Jesus. You telling me she’s not good enough for you?”

(-Fr. Corapi)

I don’t have the TV channel available, but I do check out the internet feeds sometimes.

The radio show is great. I have over an hour of car time on my commute and I listen to EWTN 95% of the time there.

EWTN is the modern day St John the Baptist. My re-conversion back to the Church four years ago was led by the Holy Spirit through EWTN. Surely, EWTN has God’s powerful anointing, presenting the truth, sometimes the painful truth, but also the hope, love and mercy that God has for all of us. The world is so hungry for the truth and the teachings of our Catholic Church, which is seldom accessible to us in our parish churches. I love Mother Angelica and all the friars, Fr. Groeschel, Fr. Corapi, etc etc. Praise and glory to the Lord for EWTN!!!
In the love and joy of Jesus,
Terri.

I love EWTN! We are so blessed to have it! I watch EWTN whenever the TV is on and it is on the radio in the car whenever I am in the car. On vacations I go through extreme withdrawals!!!

I would watch ETWN here in the southlands of California, but unfortunately, the only way we could get it is to pay extra to the cable company, or invest in satellite radio and the subscription in order to get it. It used to be aired free during certain hours on the weekends, but it was always in the wee morning hours, when many of us were fast asleep.

Yet the cable and TV companies don’t have such a restriction when airing non-Catholic, sometimes bizarre, religious programs on their dials.

Do I sense an imbalance here?

I have been thinking the same thing about my cable company. They just added another wacky new-age “religion” channel to their lineup, but seemingly ignore the fact I have requested several times that they add EWTN (it’s free for heaven’s sake!). Maybe the cable company gets a kickback from all the $ those other networks bring in through those call-in donations they continuously solicit (end rant).

I am personally looking at sattelite, since at least one of the dish companies offer EWTN in their standard line up. It wont take me much more to make the switch. Just keep up that good old customer satisfaction cable company  .

EWTN radio was the main channel of grace through which I was able to re-vert to being a practicing Christian … and then a practicing Catholic.

I had been a fallen-away Catholic, bitter toward the Church because of the moral teachings. When I first started listening to EWTN I was irritated by the many pro-life programs and comments that were made. “Why do they keep harping on that?” I thought. I was one of those who always thought abortion was disgusting, but I was still mistakenly “pro-choice”. Step by step I came to see that anybody that really wants to care about and lift up women HAS to be anti-abortion.

The pro-life programs were key for me. Then little by little I learned more about my faith. Within a year … well, I can not tell you what miracles God did on my mind and on my life. I see things so much differently now. I believe ALL Jesus’ moral teachings now, and am reconciled with His Church and so thankful. This might never have happened if I had not stumbled across the truth, “randomly”, on EWTN !

Praised be Jesus Christ! Now and forever!
