I try to adhere to the rule of a “tenth,” but only because I can afford to do so. I’m in one of the highest-paying careers and quite successful at what I do. I have no dependants to support, so I prefer to give my money to my parish or to other worthy charities instead of spending it on flashy cars or houses or the things my colleagues spend their income on. Because I’ve given more this past year to my hometown parish to aid in building a new church, my parish priest jokingly suggested they’d name the library in my honor.
