I feel terrible, I just ordered a pizza and the lady on the phone told me the total is $17.18. So I got $23.18 together. When the pizza woman came I gave her the money and she was short with me! I closed the door and looked at the receipt and there was a $2.00 delivery charge they never told me about, so the delivery lady got less than a 3 dollar tip instead of the $5 I planned on giving her. I feel bad,

but that really is their fault though, isn’t it?

I would say so. Now you know though to ask if there is a delivery charge and then figure the tip from there ;).

Actually, you gave her a $4.00 tip. 17 + 6 = 23; subtract 2 and you have 4 dollars left over, not 3.

So you shouldn’t feel so bad. Jeepers, the pizza was 17 and you gave her a 4 dollar tip, which is what, 22% ?

Now I’m a good tipper myself and I try to do 20-25% depending on service quality and have been known to do 33% for really outstanding service. . .22% is fairly decent, average, and certainly better than the old ‘15%’ that was the rule for your parents… .

Don’t beat yourself up!

P.S. I have a daughter myself in Tucson so I’ll agree with you–Arizona IS beautiful, at least Tucson is which is all I saw when I went to visit (except Phoenix from the AIR and east of Tucson from the TRAIN). Next time it’s the Grand Canyon for me!

I wouldn’t sweat it. If the company charges a fee for delivery, then that is how they are coping with rising gas costs and a larger tip is not needed.

After being short with you, I don’t think she deserved the $4! I don’t feel bad for giving a small or no tip for poor service. 🤷

I wouldn’t worry about it. It is the job of the delivery lady to deliver goods. She gets paid by her employer.

Whenever I have pizza delivered (every Wednesday night) I’m told the amount that is due and that includes the delivery fee.
Don’t feel bad about the amount you gave.
I have a son who delivers pizzas near his home and the company charges $4 for most deliveries. The drivers use their own cars so they get to keep the delivery charge as well as any tips.

I don’t think the delivery charge should be factored in. Suppose they charged you a $10 fee for delivery? Then would you have been expected to tip the person on a $27 bill? I mean, I’m being silly, but the delivery charge has nothing to do with the delivery person. I would give 20% on the cost of the pizza…not on the delivery charge on top of that.

The company makes the delivery charge, that has nothing to do with a tip. Just my two cents. No pun. However–not all pizza companies pay their drivers for gas…but if they are collecting the $2 it should go to the drivers…hello, they are delivering the pizzas. So, if she gets the delivery fee…then she should have been thankful to have received $6.

This is why I didn’t do too hot in math back in my school days.😊

You should not feel bad. I think your tip was good…$4 is enough for a $17 pizza. The real question is…was the pizza yummy?😃

Hoo-boy, I’m in for culture shock when I go home. :sad_yes: I haven’t tipped the pizza guy in five years. If the pizza is $19.90, and I give him $20, the pizza guys here in Korea will dig through their pockets for change. 😉

If you’re coming back home to Canada I don’t think it’ll be as much of a shock. From previous threads I know we have different ideas about tipping up here than they do in the States… still different than Korea I’m sure though;)

The delivery driver usually doesn’t see much or any of the delivery charge.

So what do you tip the pizza guy in Canada? While I was in college I was so broke that I had never ordered pizza for myself, and while I was growing up we lived so far out in the country that pizza places wouldn’t deliver.

i work at a pizzaria and there is a $1.50 delivery fee… this does not go to the delivery guy tho…

before we give the total to the customers the delivery charge is already added… so maybe you really did tip 5 bucks:)

pizza deleviry gets the same tip as any other service.

bad to average service=0
good service=15%
great=15-30%

i have no problem with not tipping. it is supposed to be a bonus for exceptional service not something that they are automatically owed. i think that mindset has dragged down the service industry.

that said i think your tip was more than fair, and if it were me the next time they came and it was the same person 0 tip, let them reearn it from there.

Yeah I would say 15% is considered the “standard” tip in Canada (at least here in BC). More if you are impressed by the service. Some older people still go with the old 10%…

Depending on the size of order, we do anywhere from $2 to 5.

Years ago I had a colleague do pizza delivery after hours and he said he averaged 2or 3 dollars per delivery and made anywhere from 150 to 300 a night…

That said we now do not get delivery as we are soo close to the shop that we just call in the order and DH goes and picks up;)

Ya’ll are just making me hungry for pizza! 🍕
I haven’t had pizza delivery in MONTHS!

I guess I don’t have trouble tipping well…after all, 1. I called in the order I wanted 2. they had all the ingredients, assembled and baked the pizza and then 3. got in the car and BROUGHT it to my house! I didn’t have to do anything to make food appear (well except clear the table off 😃 )! HURRAY! So I give 15-30% depending on the service (which I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad delivery person!) and how much cash I have. My dh is a college prof so we often get students he knows delivering our pizza as well. I don’t think that pizza delivery person pays all that well, barely min wage, I would guess, depending on the area of the country, ah here’s a link:
payscale.com/research/US/Job=Pizza_Delivery_Driver/Hourly_Rate

and states and min wages (yeah wikipedia, sorry about that):
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._state_minimum_wages

I don’t tip the pizza guy… I call up and order… then go pick up. I stop along the way for a soda if I am out at home. Generally, I have dh call when we are on the way home and we pick it up on the way home…am I cheap or what???
