Hello everyone,

I know that a tithe is 10% of one’s income. Is that 10% of the gross, or 10% of the net after payroll deducted health insurance, and taxes? Does anyone know the answer to this?

Thanks,
Sherilo

Catholics are not obligated to tithe 10% or any percent of income, they are required to contribute to the support of the Church and give alms to the poor, but the amount and percentage are left to personal judgement.

In the Archdiocese of Glasgow in Scotland, the late Cardinal Winning suggested 2+ 1/2% or one fortieth of your weekly wage.
However, when he said that,he was really addressing people with children and living on a working-class income.
People in the higher income bracket should pay more.Even people
who are working-class but are unmarried can afford more. This covers for people who are unemployed and cannot pay anything.
I remember a former parish priest, now dead, saying that when you sign a Covenant Form to allow the Church to claim the tax on your donation you should really be putting in a figure which reflects everything you give to the Church, not just what you pay at the Offertory on Sunday.I have never taken advantage of that, because i couldn’t guarantee that i could send the same amount to the Missions every single week/month.I only put on the Covenant Form what i pay at Mass on Sunday.

From a Mosaic Law point of view, which is that in which the tithe was to support the Levitical priesthood (but it was certainly not new with that priesthood), I think that since there were no such taxes paid to the civil government, then it’s not a straight comparison from back then to our culture today. At least, I can’t think of any taxes paid to the OT civil government.

I’ve also had to ask myself this question.

I came to the conclusion, and I think it’s reasonable, that since the tithe is to be on one’s “increase” (ie. your financial or agricultural type increase) in assets, and since we don’t actually “see” that money that’s taken out for taxes, then it’s not an “increase” to us, strictly speaking.

You might think about “Social Security,” but Lord willing, you will give to the Church when you’re old and collect that money. So I don’t think it’s necessary to “tithe” on it twice. I just realized, your own personal retirement plan might play into that in some way. Hmmmm… No need to complicate the matter too much though!

So, if you’re committed to tithing, I think you can safely tithe based on your net pay. Go ahead and feel free to do it based on the gross, I’m sure God would bless you for it, but I for one don’t feel pressured to.

A Tithe was originally a tax. That would make it 10% of the GROSS, if you were so inclined.

in old testament it is said that a 10% tithe shall be given. But i think GOD will be glad if you give even a dollar if it came from your heart than giving 10% of your income because you are obliged to do so.

Thanks for the replies. I had heard differing viewpoints wrt tithing. But, if I am not mistaken (which is very possible), I thought I heard something on Catholic radio recently that we were supposed to tithe 10%. Anyone else hear that?

Thanks,
Sherilo

Jesus praised the widow who threw her tiny coin into the collection. But it was ALL that she had.

So Jesus says 100% is a good amount 😃

that is what i suppose to say but i dont know where it is in bible. thanks for reminding me about that story. I really need to buy my own bible.

Thank you all. I am just coming in and still learning, but I thought that I had heard something about not being required to tithe. Then, on Catholic radio, I heard someone saying that we are supposed to tithe. So, I was just wondering how much.

Thanks,
Sherilo
