How much would you spend on your pet's health?

Dh and I are going through this now.
We have a 2 yr old cat, Squirrel by name, that currently has enlarged lymph nodes. The largest being the size of an egg. The FIV and FeLV tests were negative.
A week of antibiotics has done nothing. $90 so far. She recommends finishing the medicine, to see if further treatment will affect the nodes. If not, then we can try a biopsy, but because it’s the lymph nodes, surrounded by fat, it must be a wedge biopsy. (pet put under, cut open, ect). This would be some $250.
And, if it is cancer, they can’t treat it, but the U of FL could, for a great deal more money. So, what to do? Go for the biopsy, knowing that we couldn’t afford the chemo if cancer, or no biopsy, hoping it’s just reactive lymph nodes? and no big deal. I really want to know, for my own peace of mind, to prepare, I guess.
We have no children currently, and this is so hard. He and our other pets are our family, and to lose one would leave a great hole.

Thats strange university vets are usually cheaper. If you want to do a biopsy and find out the cost at the school. My dog went in to U of Penn a few years ago, you would be there for a while because a student exams the animal and then a professor does. But it was cheaper than all of our previous vets.
