My friends on CAF learn from my foolishness. Last night I made a foolish bet. I bet a Pentecostal $100 that they couldn’t find the word “immerse” in relation to baptism in the Bible. I did this hoping to challenge their belief that immersion baptism and only immersion baptism is valid. But in doing so I forgot a few things. I forgot that the scriptures were written in Greek, and that in the Greek East people are immersed. I also forgot that all heresies like this idea that immersion is the only valid baptism come from somewhere.
My friends I lost the bet on a technicality. I forgot that the word baptizo in Greek means to dip or immerse! Now I could do many things. I could for instance refuse to pay the bet, as she did not find the English word immerse. But if I do that I send the message that Catholics don’t admit when they’re wrong and don’t keep their word. And so my friends I am out $100. But in paying the bet I send another message. I appear to endorse and validate the views of heretics. I have made this young woman more confident in her heresy. And I have brought great scandal on the Church. And so my friends learn from me. If the above wasn’t enough, I am also out $100 that I don’t have, and it will take even longer to pay off my other debts. Such bets my friends are not a good way to evangelize or bring people to the Church. So learn from me…

Yes, don’t make a bet unless you’re 100% positive you will win. :o

The better bet would have been to ask her to find in Scripture where is says that Baptism by immersion is the only option. Baptism by immersion has always been present in the Church from the beginning. But it has never been the only valid option.

Even the Catechism says that “Baptism is performed in the most expressive way by triple immersion in the baptismal water” (CCC 1239).

Tough break. 😦

Pay the woman! :o
I fully intend too:) But then I’m going to challenge her(no money) to find an explicit reference in the Bible that says immersion is the only valid way to baptize. And I’m going to smile inside that she won’t be able too;)
