A friend/classmate is in need of surgery. I asked him if he would like to recieve the Sacrament of the Sick one weekend when we are at shcool. I thought the others in the class would like to be united with him in this way through his illness & recovery. He says that he can only recieve the Sacrament once prior to his surgery and would prefer to recieve it from his parish priest. Is it true that a person can only recieve the Sacrament of the Sick once prior to a surgery? Would it be significant for a person to recieve the Sacrament several time with different communities through the sme illness?

Generall for the same illness once every couple of months. If a person recovers and then becomes sick again they can again receive it or if the become worse during the same illness.

This is so the Sacrament is not abused. However in this case he is not intentionally abusing the Sacrament. If he were to receive it twice in a few weeks once with an educational purpose for his class to witness as well as receiving the Sacrament again from his parish priest among his parish community, could be a reasonable exception. That however would be up to the two priests administering the Sacrament.

The above is true.

But also before every operation.

Not like removing finger nail stuff, but ussually that means when you are knocked out by anesthesia.

I have had two surgeries this year: once to put in a fistula to make an access for kidney dialysis, and for cataract.

I was anointed before each one, and I attribute the grace in this Mystery to starting the healing of my kidneys. They had only 19% function (dialysis starts at 15%) and since February (I was anointed in January) they have had 40% function. My nephrologist is amazed; kidney function NEVER improves this much.

And I’m having the other cataract removed Monday. You’d better believe I’m getting anointed Sunday at Liturgy with all the faithful praying for me!
