Out of sadness, and specifically, number of days out of the week? Is there a frequency at or above which, is too much or grounds for psychological concern?

Interesting. There are so many mitigating factors that I wonder how ‘psychological concern’
vould be discerned.I mean, many…

And for women, the hormonal reality can not be dismissed.

for many women, it’s nothing more than hormones sometimes.

What is a ‘normal’ frequency? Well depends on a whole bunch of things like whether there are any (or many) upsetting or stressful things going on in your life, or past upsetting or stressful events affecting you at the moment for some reason.

Some people are just naturally more emotional in good and bad times than others, so might naturally cry more without it being wrong.

If a person feels like they’re crying a lot more than usual for them and there is no real reason for it that they can think of, best to seek counselling. No harm if there turns out to be nothing wrong, can be very helpful if there is.

There’s no set number. Barring any extraordinary event (trauma, death of loved one, etc.), anything above your own personal “normal” would be a cause for concern. For example, are your bad days outweighing your good days? If so, make a doctor’s appointment. HTH.

Hey, men have hormones too!

And to say ‘it’s often just hormones’ is to ignore the fact that hormonal changes often bring physical changes with them, which can be physically uncomfortable or at least somewhat distressing.

If a woman cries because she is in pain from a headache it’s fairly easily accepted. Why be dismisive if she cries because cramps at ‘that time of the month’ or the physical stress of sudden weight gain during pregnancy are similarly painful?

In reference to the bolded, the DSM-5 stipulates that any behavior that may possibly be indicative of a psychological disorder must impair one’s day-to-day functioning and is distressing to either the person with aforementioned behavior or negatively impacting those around the person. Succinctly, there is no “frequency” that is too much (ex. So, thoughts like “If I cry five times a week, it must be abnormal” are not useful.), but merely whenever the behavior negatively impacts one’s life. If you are concerned, I would definitely consult your doctor or a mental health specialist.

I have cried once in my life, at my mother’s funeral. But I am a man and we Aussies know that men don’t cry unless they are politicians near a camera.
Women are built differently and are socially trained that crying is a useful tool and psychologically allowed and encouraged to defuse and eliminate emotional challenges.
There is no norm and no harm in a little weep, just ask any Victorian heroine.
Hormones do take a part, but it should not be ignored as a valid mood indicator that needs addressing.
When my wife cries I just tell her to get over it and go down to the pub till she’s ok. Worried sick about her of course, but you can’t let it get to you personally or you’ll let on you care and life won’t be worth living.
(To Americans reading this post, only kidding I actually just hold her whilst she blames me for everything and I look helplessly for the “solution”, whilst she beats me up, gets over it and then goes to make us both a cup of coffee…)

I probably cry around once every 2 weeks. More often, sometimes up to 3 times a week depending on the time of month. And if I’m under severe psychological stress, then up to once or twice a day.

I only allow myself to cry when I’m alone, and I don’t allow myself to cry at physical pain.

Suppose we exclude causes of sadness that are rooted in and self-attributed to physical ailments or pains, e.g. cramps, headaches, cancer, etc.

I am thinking more of sadness related to anxieties and reflections on the state of things (evaluation of one’s condition, e.g. vocation, spiritual life, one’s family, the problems and sins of the world, etc.)

My temperament is melancholic. I often feel overwhelmed by things that, I assume, most other people, especially non-Catholics, would find trivial.

I found this description to be astoundingly astute and precise. As understanding as this piece of writing is ( I could hardly describe myself and my dispositions better than it), I am still left wondering about how to practically distinguish between sensitivity and over sensitivity in the area of sorrow.

On the other hand, I cry loads. Not ashamed, not embarrassed, and I don’t give a flying anything what other people think. (I’m a 23 year old married, pregnant, white American female, if that makes any difference.)

This morning I cried when I realized my sister wouldn’t be giving her First Confession today because I felt like a poor sponsor for leading her on to believe that she would be (through my own ignorance). That led to a deep despondence over the innumerable number of people raised Catholic who don’t know or believe in the Real Presence and receive anyways.

Then I watched a terribly miserable video called “Here’s the Blood” on abortion, and I cried loads. Then this evening I cried because I ate spicy Indian food and it made me really sick, and it hurts really bad to throw up spicy food. I cry every time I hear the hymn, “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross.” I cry in Adoration sometimes. I cry when I’m mad, frustrated, sad, or happy. I just cry to give my tear ducts something to do. 👍

But I’m generally a pretty happy person! Crying for me, is an expression of emotion, to feel it 100% rather than try to hide it or explain it away. If you’re angry, feel the anger. If you’re sad, feel the sadness. Then you move on. Don’t linger, don’t dwell. But that’s just my experience. Everyone’s different. 🤷

Edited to add:
When my wife cries I just tell her to get over it and go down to the pub till she’s ok. Worried sick about her of course, but you can’t let it get to you personally or you’ll let on you care and life won’t be worth living.

Hysterically funny. Being married to a Brit, this is pretty much about right, except substitute tea for coffee. 😛

It comes and goes for me. Sometimes I cry about once a day, but it’s always when it comes to God and I’m contemplating something about Him that I cry out of Joy or sadness. This goes on for a time, then I don’t cry for weeks to a month, then it comes back. Also, if I mortally sin, I have the biggest cry fest ever. Like fetal position, for 20 minutes. I can be quite emotionally unstable at times because I lost my tolerance when I opened up to my ex girlfriend. I had kept my emotions under wraps for so long that now they barge through the door when they feel like it. But I kinda like crying.

I am a male in my 40’s.

Last year, I was in the throes of deep depression and anxiety attacks. I was feeling a lot of overwhelming sadness after the sudden unexpected death of my best friend in his 40’s. I started thinking about my own death constantly, got deep into hypochondria, and was also very overwhelmingly nostalgic for my daughter’s younger years…I missed her being a baby and toddler…even the thought would drive me to weeping. Songs would make me cry. TV would make me cry. I was crying heavily several times a day.

I was put on a combination of anti-anxiety meds and anti-depressants, and eventually the crying all but stopped. The anxiety attacks stopped. I still get sad, but feel more numb to the deep emotions.

Well, who is to say what’s ‘trivial’?

Sometimes we have days - or lives - where lots of things that individually aren’t huge pile up one upon another, like snowflakes on a tree branch in a blizzard, until the branch cracks under the sheer weight of numbers of them.

I can’t seem to be able to cry much even when I’m in deep emotional distress. I know I function fine regarding my tear ducts, it’s just that even when I wish I could cry (I think it does help relieve the stress from such feelings), I simply can’t. I think it may simply be because I am extremely reserved about such emotions but even when I’m alone it doesn’t happen. I might cry maybe ten times a year, tops. If that.

When I feel miserable I cry.
It’s good to cry it makes me feel better afterwards and Im not ashamed to admit that Im a twentythree year old male that occationaly cries.
I think what seperates us men from women when it comes to crying is mostly that we do not appriciate to cry in front of others. I myself never cries in front of anybody, but often cry alone.
As others has mentioned I can cry when praying to our Lord (especially the seven Sorrows of Mary Rosary), I may cry if Im watching a sad movie (again by myself), I may cry out of joy if the teams I rooting for wins big stuff. But mostly I cry becouse I feel like Im not handeling my life as good as I should.

Sometimes I cry becouse I miss being able to see God and communicate with him face to face as I know Im ment to.
When Im missing God like this it’s so painful to know that we’re separated due to my sins.
That’s actually when Im weeping the most.

Anyhow, I cry to and Im a man:)
It’s just how I was made:P a sentimental person.

I confirmed what I had thought.

15 moves in 15 years. Sometimes, a few moves in one year, since I lived in one town for 4 years.
Copious tears.

And that’s just one reason.

😃

Too much for a guy (i know there is no such thing :D)

But I’ll admit i’m a guy who is pretty sad at times and I just get depressed quickly. But I get up pretty easily. I almost wonder if I have a sort of bipolar disorder without the mania. Granted my depression doesn’t really last long. I just get so sad thinking about the bad things in life

I used to cry more, like a few times a week because of someone. But I barely talk to that person anymore, so for the past several months I’ve only cried a handful of times. One of them was yesterday, when I saw this “No-cry challenge” that had ten really sad videos and of course I was already crying on the first video!

Hardly at all; never was much of a crier. Looking back, am more likely to cry in fury than in sorrow or pain. 🤷
