I try for every other week.

Best: Hard to say…I’ve had a couple of really good confessions recently and it has strengthened my spiritual and prayer life immensely.

Worst: That’s easy. I was a convert and was baptized at the Easter Vigil in 1999. I never went to confession prior to my baptism because I was told that it would wipe away all my sins, not just Original Sin. About a month later I went for my first confession and when I told the priest that, he said I should have gone BEFORE I was baptized. I was absolutely embarrassed and mortified! Nothing like being told you screwed up before you admit you screwed up. I nearly gave up on the whole thing. By God’s grace, however, I went back…but not to that priest.
Actually, I don’t think you CAN go to confession before being baptized. One of the requirements for all the sacraments (including cofession) is baptism.

My spiritually director said a good way to tell when you need to go to confession is simply to watch the 7 day votive candle in the chapel when they replace the candle, its time to go to confession.

Well then I guess everyone is holier than St. Thomas Aquinas (who went everyday) along with the holiest of Saints that went everyday… maybe he is just too lazy to perform his duty of hearing Confessions?
Exactly. I hate it when priests say that. You should be able to go every day if you want. That said I only go once a month as I’m perfect…no I suffer from scrupulosity and going more often aggravates my symptoms horrendously

Went last week, felt a whole lot better for it too, had to confess being rude to some on this forum, now that was penance 😉

I asked my confessor how often I should go, and he encouraged me to go whenever I felt the need. That usually works for me…I go when the Holy Spirit prompts me…It tends to be about every six weeks or so, more often at times.

I am happy to say that I have FINALLY found a confessor that I trust and like. He is very good. He spends as much time with me as I need. I go to his office, and that works well for both of us.

I have found that the more I participate in the wonderful sacrament, the more I appreciate it and love it. It isn’t always easy to tell Father what I need to tell him, but the momentary embarrassment is worth the wonderful feeling I have when I leave Father D.s office or the confessional.

All I can say is not enough… especially since our Holy Father goes everyday…

**I go to confession when I feel the need to go…That may be every couple of weeks, or every four or five weeks, maybe six. Depends. My confessor is comfortable with this. **

I “know” when I need to go…The Holy Spirit speaks rather plainly to me…When I feel that “nudge” I go…

The pope goes to confession every week.
The Pope goes to confession THREE times a week according to a video about his life. Additionally, when alive, Mother Theresa went to confession DAILY.

I don’t go on a set rate. Sometimes it’s three months, sometimes it’s three weeks.

I commend all those who go Daily/Many Times a Week. 👍

If the Priests in the parishes near my home actually showed up to hear confessions for the stated times they should be hearing them, I’d go every week. As it is, I got tired of showing up for confession only to find empty confessionals, so now I need to drive further for reliable Priests, so I go once a month.

I am glad someone brought this up. I think this is part of my Cathoic faith that I lack. I just dont understand going to confession. I had a bad experience there last year and have not gone since. I pray in the morning to God and at night as well, asking him for forgivness and thanking him for all he blesses me with.
If God is suppose to hear my prayers then why do I need to place them at the alter of a priest?

I want to go, but I have a real problem with it. I remember going as a child and I was scared. After it was over I did genuinely feel better like a weight had been lifted off me. The last time I went, the priest kept looking at his watch. I really got up set over that.

Can anyone help me?

thanks
God bless

Don’t go face to face then you’ll never know if the priest is getting antsy. I’d be upset too!

We need to confess our sins to the priest because that’s the way God wants us to do it. That’s pretty much it.

It’s never easy for me to go to confession. I love it when they have it right before the masses so I can’t really make excuses for not going. I try and go as often as I can.

I second the poster who posted about the Opus Dei priests. My husband and I love going to them whenever we can. It’s a lot easier for him because his spiritual director comes and meets with him near work every 2 weeks. They will only hear women’s confessions in the confessional.

Every First Friday! 🙂
The Shrine by my house has a great first friday tradition I go to every month. Confession, Rosary, Mass, Lunch. Looooove It!! 😃

I never thought I’d use the words “cool” and “Confession” in the same sentence, but what you just described is very cool indeed!

Once every two weeks…I find that I can’t remember my sins if I wait longer (too many  )

I’m now going every two weeks, something I just started about two months ago. Before, I was only going once every few months. At my previous parish, Confession was available every Saturday but was not emphasized. Now, I am in a place that offers Confession every day except Sunday. I am very, very lucky. I can only make it on Thursday, but I make sure I keep that afternoon free for it. I usually go to Confession and then stay in the chapel until 5pm Mass. That’s a great way to spend a Thursday afternoon.

I must say, I am still at the stage of my spiritual life where I really don’t like going to Confession. I love the feeling of peace I have when it is over, but every time I am about to go, I get really nervous and don’t want to go. Right now, I kind of view it as my way of saying to God, “I really don’t want to do this, but if it makes You happy…” I’m also trying to get people to go with me, because if I know I am meeting someone there, it is easier to go. I will go even when there is not someone to hold me accountable, but it makes it a lot easier when I know there is someone like that. This worked out really well today, because the guy I got to go with me hadn’t been to Confession in five years. I was so excited for him that I forgot my own nervousness. Now he’s going to try to go every week.

I know people who have only gone to communal penance and have never actually gone to a regular confession ever.
