How often do you go to Confession?

I have the intention to go once a week, and I actually end up going about once a month or once every six weeks or so.

I can’t imagine spacing it out any more than that - I’d forget what I wanted to confess if I waited any longer than that, I think.

I confess my venial sins in order to gain the graces of the Sacrament as a shield of armour against committing any mortal sins.

The way I see it, there are two ways to be saved from sin - one is to take the Father’s hand and have Him pull you up out of the pit after you’ve fallen in and gotten yourself all muddy and bruised, not to mention humiliated, by confessing your mortal sins.

The second way is to see the pitfall in your path ahead of time, and put your hand into the Father’s hand straight away, so that He can carry you over the pitfall, without you actually falling into it, by confessing your venial sins, and gaining the grace to avoid the temptations of mortal sin.

That’s just how I see it, though. The Church only requires that we confess our mortal sins, and it’s not wrong to follow that minimum.

Very novice here. haven’t studied enough yet. However the way it was explained to me Confession is to confess Mortal sins. Mortal sins I thought were the biggies where the Bible says you won’t get into the kingdom such as Adulter,Fornication, Sodemy, Drunkenes, Stealing etc… However reading on these boards Mortal sins seems like a subjective area. I have seen where one can almost make any sin into a mortal sin. Then what about sins of conscious when something bothers someones conscious-- it is a sin to him, but not neccessarily a sin to everyone else? Just curious. My understanding like the poster above- If you aren’t comitting Mortal sins every week why go to confession every week. Still learning only in inquiry part of RCIA. I have noticed ampng some Catholics tend to measure their own and others spirituality by how “churchy” they are. It isn’t the person who attends the most masses (ie goes to Mass every day as opposed to once a week) or goes to confession the most often but the conditon of the heart that is more important. Anyway I’m still learning

One does receive special graces when they go to confession so you do not have to have serious, grave or “mortal” sins to go to confession. It also helps to have a spiritual director “Priest” to guide you on your Christian way.

I usually go twice a week though sometimes more often. Every time that I descend into the depths of mortal sin, I make my way to the confessional ASAP. I have never been one that felt I could pull off a perfect act of contrition successfully so I head to the confessional at the first available opportunity.

And despite the protestations of some of our more enlightened thinkers these days, a committed Catholic can indeed fall into mortal sin quite easily, too easily in fact. It is good to remember that often neglected fact.
