How often do you go?

Agreed, but I will make a wager that most people when commiting these sins do in fact meet all the conditions for comiting a Mortal Sin. That is why I posted the listing. I kknow that people commit hese sins evenry day and pay absolutely no mind to them at all. In short they just don’t care.

Too many people in the Church today including Pastors, sad to say, reject the concept of personal responsibility for sins and the need for penance. Heck they reject Purgatory and Hell as well in many cases. They instead adhere or seem to adhere to the Protestant philosophy that salvation, once accepted can never be lost.
I think a lot of people realize they are sins but I think a lot of people do not know the disctinction between the different degrees of sin.

In order for a sin to be mortal, it must meet three conditions:
Mortal sin is a sin of grave matter
Mortal sin is committed with full knowledge of the sinner
Mortal sin is committed with deliberate consent of the sinner

It is not that easy to commit a mortal sin. Actually, I think most people don’t commit mortal sin often. My pastor told me no more than once a month. I go whenever I feel the gentle remind from the Holy Spirit.
Actually, it’s not the first part, but the second part. I believe many of my friends do not know that not attending mass on Sunday is mortal sin. Without knowledge, it won’t be a mortal sin. I’m just a very unfortunate person, that I love to learn about catholicism, which makes me go to confession more often. I think I know too much now that I can’t do something without thinking whether it’s a sin or not 😛

I started to do confession weekly/bi-weekly since July. Before that, my last confession was November 2004. I’m just glad that I met wonderful priests to be my confessors since I started to do weekly confession, because I heard stories where
  1. The priest left the confession room,
  2. The priest did not want to give absolution,
  3. The priest chased the person out of the confession room because he committed same sins over and over again,
    etc.

I used to go to confession about every two weeks or at least monthly. However, recently I was trying to root out an irritating and repetitive sin. I started going to confession weekly and praying for the grace to overcome this particular temptation. Guess what? After about 4 or 5 weeks of working on that one sin, I am no longer tempted by it. Confession is AWESOME! I am saddened that more people do not participate in the Sacrament. I have now become a firm believer in weekly confession, because I think it can do amazing things for our spiritual growth. Sadly, I can’t always make it because I belong to a small parish and the priest only hears confession on Saturday from 4:30-5:00. Sometimes it is hard to make it!

I also like to go to confession frequently in order to obtain indulgences for souls in purgatory (or sometimes for myself). I know many people don’t really believe in indulgences anymore but I do. So, that is another reason I go to frequent confession.

Very available confession times here in Wichita, Ks. !!!👍
I know and I miss that!!! It’s hard to find a time to go out here in the boonies. But we try to go every 1-2 months. We usually have to drive a ways to a parish that offers it…😦

Are we required to go when the sins are just venial ones? I know the difference between the two, and thought you only really needed to go if the sins were mortal. That was the impression I got from the priest the last time I went, anyways. He seemed puzzled as to why I was there when I only had venial sins to confess that time. I’m trying really hard not to sin otherwise, but maybe I’m now suffering the sin of pride because I don’t really think I need to go, but just do the general confession during mass…

Venial sins are covered in the general absolution during mass. However, even venial sins, when committed repeatedly, have a more profound effect on the faithful. If it’s a real problem, confession might be the way to go.

As I started writing this I was more confident in my response than I am now because I had heard this somewhere. Now I can’t remember the exact wording of what I had heard or read. Maybe someone can offer a better response.

Actually, to be honest, I am very lax about going to reconciliation. The last time I went was right before Easter. Part of the reason I don’t go more often is because of my husband; you see when he was going through RCIA we were in a parish with a pretty lax priest. This priest said basically that anyone who had to go to confession more than once a year was either a very bad person or had scruples (not his exact wording, but more or less). This has really stuck with my husband. Now we go to another parish (on my insistence :o), but my husband would really love to go back to the old one. He also has certain issues, so if I were to all of a sudden start going to confession often, it would cause a scandal 😦 . I’m really praying that there would be some way, oh I don’t know, that we could get on the same page when it comes to being more orthodox in the Faith?

 Sorry to ramble on, I don’t make much sense…

Your statements are correct. However, it is highly recommended to confess venial sins.
Confession is a Sacrament. All Sacraments brings God’s grace. Pop John Paul II did confession frequently. Does that mean he was a sinful man? No, not at all, he was far far away from that. Saint Mother Teresa confessed frequently also.

Once a priest told me that was “devotional confession”, which means even one does not really, have sins to confess, but goes to receive the Sacrament anyway. This is to keep God’s grace open. Confession requires humility and obedience. The action itself is a good discipline that shows our willingness to strive for holiness.

It is really too bad the priest said what he said.
Once a priest on EWTN mentioned that we should not advocate only mortal sins need to be confessed; otherwise, people would look at the confessional line and thought those people were all mortal sinners, which is not true!

As far as I know, people confess venial sins all the time.
Confession is such a beautiful and moving Sacrament.
It always brings me close to God, and close to my inner self.

Don’t let the misconception deprive yourself of God’s grace.
God bless!

I’ve been going once a month. I would like to start going a bit more often. I wish more churches offered confession during the week. Seems like most of them only offer it on Saturday afternoons.

I was just curious how often others go to reconciliation…
Once or twice a week. Depending on the mortality of sins. Weekly even with no mortality, that dayif I sin mortally. I don’t want to wait until I get into a car accident or something if I have offended God so gravely.

The second paragraph is quite true. Even when we (narrowmindedly mind you) think that our sins are small, there is still the abundance of Grace that we receieve. It coats us with the armor of the Holy Spirit. I’ll take free Grace even when I think I am "sinless’ (which is laughable) any day. That’s why I don’t get why it isn’t more popular. It’s free grace, which is extremely powerful.

Ooh, I love to obtain plenary indulgences! 😃 It’s a wonderful, very generous, additional grace that comes, in part, from Confession. I almost always seek indulgences for the most forgotten souls in Purgatory, who have no one to remember them and pray for them. Maybe once or twice a year, I obtain one for myself. 😉 It’s a shame more Catholics don’t take advantage of indulgences these days.

I go to Confession at least once a month. I am very fortunate to live in a parish where there are Confessions on various days and different times of day. 🙂
