My friend has been part of Life in the Spirit, praying for us when we took it and started doing that. I asked her once what she was saying and she didn’t even know.

I’m not trying to be ignorant, but could someone please explain why praying in tounges is useful?

@(name removed by moderator) has done us all a service with his words in this thread. The link that @AveOTheotokos provided is an excellent find.
Teaching from this FSSP priest says what we call “praying in tongues” is not so. “Tongues’” origins are from Protestantism, notably Pentacostalism and therefore not from God.
Have you read any materials from the Companions of the Cross? They too are a Society of Apostolic Life (of diocesan right).

Also, I’m not saying that “origins are from Protestantism, notably Pentacostalism and therefore not from God” is true, but for the sake of making a comparable point - lets say that it is. We have a couple of elements borrowed from the Jews, yes? Does that mean those are not from God? We have Sacred Music that has come from Protestants, should we exclude those contributions? Mozart was a mason, should we dismiss the Requiem?
and my Dad tore my ass up with the Belt.
My father had weekend custody of us for a few years, during that time he took us to Mass on Sundays. Quizzed us after about what the readings were and what the homily was about.

It’s a miracle in itself how my father beating me (among other actions - and yes, the belt was among his “tools of the trade” as it pertained to physical abuse) didn’t permanently change my perception of the Catholic church.
How do people know that it ain’t coming from the evil one?
If they are around folks who have the gift of discernment of spirits or the gift of interpreting tongues, it helps.

This is totally offtopic. We are discussing tongues as per the Catholic Charismatic movement

And frankly for those who are in the movement and speak /pray in tongues , this is incredibly insulting.

@AINg: If you’re really interested you have the same net access I do. If not I have no interest in searching out information to throw at a skeptic.

@dallas_r: Useful for building up the faith of both those who pray and those who hear.
Also bear in mind the difference between ‘speaking in tongues’ which is to help others, and ‘praying in the spirit’ which is for the one who prays.

Not in her case, although she was “praying” in tongues.

When is authentic prayer not “in the Spirit”? Could someone, anyone, please define “praying in tongues”?

Op , i belong to a Catholic charismatic prayer group. Most everyone there prays and sings in tongues.

So, how does one know if its from the Holy Spirit, by its fruits. How does it connect the person praying, to God. How does it make the praying person feel, peaceful or anxious?

Maybe our group has been extremely blessed in most all being able to use tongues. Our Priest cannot. He prays with us, in the group too.

Here’s a video illustrating two Protestant-Pentecostal phenomena, one called being “drunk in the spirit”, the other being “holy laughter”.
I show you some counterfeit money and show how it was made. Have I disproven the existence of genuine currency?
I show you a whole stack of evidence proving the guilt of various quack ‘doctors’. Have I proved the medical profession as a whole is worthless?

The Church disagrees. I think some people are legitimately faking it, but I also believe that if scripture told us about tongues, there must be something to it.

I really think “praying in tongues” is nothing more than a mechanism of self-induced low-level trance. It is gibberish. Not a bad thing in and of itself. Low-level trance occurs naturally all the time: the way a song “takes you away” or the way a repetitive rocking motion clears your thoughts. It can be conducive to prayer, so in that sense it’s good.

But to call the gibberish itself a gift of the Spirit and construe scripture to appear to be defining the phenomena as such is not a good thing. Especially when the Church has never defined it as such.

It’s on par with Medjugorje.

Ever been to a Catholic Charismatic prayer group.?

One would think if its low level trance, then events would occur before to induce that.

Try it, ask the Holy Spirit for this gift

Yes, I have. My parents “prayed in tongues”.

Again, when is authentic prayer not “in the Spirit”? Could someone, anyone, please define “praying in tongues”?
then events would occur before to induce
I said the gibberish is the mechanism, not the trance.
