How often should someone talk to there SD or is that something the director decides? Thanks, Tim

They usually work with you to determine an appropriate interval. My guy and I meet about once a month, but sometimes it’s more like 8 weeks.

Probably the most common interval is once a month. But there’s no formula.

I don’t have a Spiritual director. How do I go about having one?
Currently, as I normally do here on CAF, I have about 3 friends in my parish and other parish to discuss with.

Thanks!

You might ask around if someone can recommand someone to you, your catholic friends, parish priest, inquire at the next monastery or call your diocesis, they sometimes keep lists of potential spiritual directors who have still time for more people to direct. The seminary of your diocesis will probably also know whre to find spiritual directors.

In communities of the Jesuits, for exampkle, usually every Pater will offer direction, and Opus Dei does, too, as far as I am aware.

Finding a director can be difficult. One strategy I recommend is when you go to confession, and a priest offers exceptionally astute counsel, ask if he will hear your confessions on a regular basis. Give him an interval: every 2 months or every month – just so he won’t think you’re going to be moving into the rectory!

If confession goes well, you could then approach the idea of spiritual direction. A lot of priests do not have confidence in their own abilities with this.

Some convents have sisters trained in spiritual direction.

I have no particular confidence in SD certification programs; they tend to be based on psychotherapeutic models, which are, to my thinking, inadequate.

Mine is every 6 weeks decided by my SD. He only allows 45 minutes for each session. Once I asked if possible to extend the session for a few minutes. SD said if he sensed I needed more time he would let me know, if he felt I need less time, he would also let me know. I always have a list of questions to discuss and never be able to finish them. But I am very grateful for what I have.

Like St. Faustina said in her Diary, it is a blessing from God to have a good spiritual director.

Pray that they will be evident to you. I’m about to ask a confessor I once had for direction, hence why I ask the question of how often. The Priest I seek is 50 miles away and I’ve only talked to him once before, but the Lord put him in my path in a profound way. So I’ll see if he is the one by calling him and asking. Thanks to all of you for the replies, Tim

Maybe creep up on him softly. Ask him for a half hour to discuss the **possibility **of spiritual direction . . . Maybe have an idea of what you think that means.

If this guy regularly heard your confessions, and that relationship was good, he might welcome your confidence and be flattered that you are asking!

50 miles isn’t so far (unless it’s across Los Angeles at rush hour). I know someone who drives 250 miles from Buffalo to Steubenville about every 6 weeks.

We had a face to face and he is not timid. He said something to me that only he would recall and gave me direction on the spot about spiritual things out of the norm. He actually gave me orders. Something clicked and I think he felt it. Tim

👍 Then it sounds like a plan! Congratulations and THANK YOU, Holy Spirit!

I finally got the nerve to call him and he’s in Italy until the 21st. 😦 . Tim
