How often was Papal Solemn Mass celebrated?

I don’t have an official source or anything, but I remember hearing somewhere that it was somewhat rare. Once a year or something.

That is what I have heard.

It was quite a production.

Usually the Pope celebrated a private low Mass. There was also a public Papal Low Mass, still quite complex.

Unfortunately, as far as I understand, it would be difficult for the current Pope to celebrate a Papal Solemn Mass today, because the Mass requires the Papal Court, which was disbanded.

Of course, the Pope can always install clerics to act in those roles, but I say: bring back the Papal Court! And the Papal Tiarra! And the Papal Sedia Gestatoria!

It would be so wonderful to see the Pope celebrate the EF in any form.

Young Trad Cath you have raised such an interesting topic. The mass was something else. It should still be done to show the world the power and majesty of the Church and its triumph over all. There are so many different rituals. I really miss the “sic transit gloria mundi” at the coronation. It was so meaningful. The Pope in the sedia gestatoria riding under a canopy with the ostrich plums stops several times on the way into St Peters. A simple Franciscan drops a strip of linen in a burning brazer on a pole and chants Holy Father thus goes the glories of the world, while the strip is burned up. It goes back to the days of the triumphs by a Roman general, where a slave rode in the chariot of the general and kept repeating" remember thou are only a man". Also the Pope had different chalices prepared for use at the altar-in case one was poisoned. The pope would communicate by drinking the precious Blood by use of a golden straw called a fistula. Good post !!!

Yes, it would be difficult. But when wasn’t it difficult, lol?

The Papal Court is now the Papal Household, which is divided into the Papal Chapel and Papal Family. There are more offices and members of the Papal Household than there were of the Papal Court, incidentally. There are more than enough people to pull it off. The Vatican’s administrative powerhouse is now quite larger than it was before Vatican II.

Few of the roles of those who actually took part in Papal Solemn Mass actually had anything to do with their Vatican job/title at all. So yes, as you say, it wouldn’t be difficult to install people to act in those roles.

Just imagine the glory of watching Christmas Midnight Mass on mainstream TV while this is going on!
