I have just finished reading the thread on about Noah’s ark and the flood, and doubt seriously whether I could add anything to what was said. It did raise a questions in my mind which I did not see addressed in any depth. That is, How old is the earth and how long did creation take? I have my own opinions, but would be very interested in what you all have to say.

It is generally accepted that the universe in 13.'7 billion years old and the age of the earth is 4.55 billion years.

In a sense creation is continuing as the seas and land masses are constantly changing.

Generally accepted by who?

The arrogance of man never ceases to amaze me. I can barely remember what I did yesterday, yet the “brights” among us can quantify the essence of the universe to within +/- a billion years.

Wow!

Note that this assumes that physical laws and constants are been uniform over time and through out space. Since our direct observations are limited to a few years and the solar system; this is a bit presumptuous. The only real justification for this assumption is that there is no basis for any other.

And is the best ansumption possible unless God is a liar.
And God is not a liar. At least not mine.

So the universe might be a few billion years older or younger, same for the earth. But they are old.

Unless you are more Papist that the Pope I do not know why the problem with that. The CC long ago moved away from Young Earth Creationism anyways into Theistic Evolutionism or Old Earth Creationism.

The earth is about 4.6 billion years old. There is really no credible dispute over that. Its ludicrous for anyone to believe that it is only a few thousand years old.
The Bible certainly makes absolutely no mention of the age of the earth and again for someone to be so simplistic to add up the generations and come to the age of the earth makes no sense.
Carbon dating is not so inaccurate that it mistakes 4 plus billion years for a few thousand.
There are some that say God made material things to only seem as if they were billions of years old but that would mean God had deceived us which he cannot do.
I think the young earth supporters have nothing to hang their hats on.

On your other question I do not believe the earth was created in six 24 hour periods and we are also not required to believe that.

Hay y’all, I agree with what you are saying. I just wanted to see what others believed. . I am surprised that there has not been one who did the adding up of generations in the bible to the present and postulate that as the age of the earth. I am curious to see just how far this will go.

I am Protestant and I have many, many Protestants who believe the Earth is only 11,000 years old, give or take. They believe in a literal 7 day week of creation, dinosaurs lived with Adam and Eve, etc. My pastor who has a degree in evolutionary biology also claims the earth is young, and he has lots of scientific reasonings for it. For example. the Flood story…if the entire earth was covered by water, the water had no place to recede to because there was no dry land for it to recede to. My pastor says the water receded because the earth opened up and water went into the earth so it could recede. And dinosaurs…since death did not exist before Adam and Eve were created, dinosaurs could not have existed before them and then died before man was created. Those are a few examples of what some Protestants believe. Just giving you more food for thought!

WOW…Were they home-schooled or what? And what kind of science courses didn’t they ‘get’?

Excuse me? Homeschooling does NOT equal ignorance.

Evolution is a THEORY. Creationism is another THEORY. It’s all THEORIES. Not all Protestants believe the things that t68ware mentioned.

God can do anything. He could have created the earth 11,000 years ago. He could have created it 4.6 billion years ago. Point is, He created it. Just because something in the Bible seems to be scientifically impossible doesn’t mean that it couldn’t have happened. People rising from the dead is a scientific impossibility, as well, but Christians stake their eternal salvation on the fact that it happened!

Well, seems the Bible is meant to be the authority in this forum. Why not let IT speak. Jews can nearly place the day of “creation”. If the Bible doesn’t appear symbolic it IS meant to be literal. If that is the case creation took place approximately 6000 years ago. If my God in a day can make the stars… (have you ever pondered them truly?) Then is it unreasonable to accept (as in Adam and Eve) He created all with an appearance of “age”? I have no difficulty accepting the Bible as the Rock for my life. “Let God be true and man be a lie” Rom. 3:4:thumbsup:

The only problem is that I don’t think the Bible is as clear as many people think. I know that there are those who add up the generations and ages, but I see one major flaw with this.

Genesis states that the Lord made everything in six days and then rested. It then states “Such is the story of the heavens and the earth at their creation” (Genesis 2:4).

Verse 7 then discusses the Lord creating man. However, the time between verses 4 and 7 is not specified.

Could it not be that after making creation the Lord allowed the earth to sit for a few billion years before putting man on it?

When I had Sacred Scripture in the seminary, way back when, our professor was also a Hebrew scholar. He pointed out that in Hebrew the word **“YOM” **which means day, can also mean decades and also an indeterminate period of time. Therefore, we do not know, nor does it suggest from the texts, whether it was meant to be a period of 24 hours for an earthly day as we commonly understand it. A decade. or eons and eons of time.

I am not impressed with home-schooling. Over the years, students that I have had come to school after home-schooling have been somewhat socially impeded, lack knowledge in many areas (especially fine arts and p.e.), and, in case of fundy parents, reject a lot of scientific fact.

It doesn’t happen through one’s will. It happened because GOD willed it to happen, not our own efforts.

I was homeschooled for eleven years, then went to public school for three and graduated in the top 3% of my class. You would have to elaborate on “socially impeded,” but if it means not being able to relate to kids who look at someone wearing a prairie skirt and go “Oh, she’s weird,” then why should anyone want to relate to them? P. E., from what I’ve heard about it, is a pretty useless subject - just forced physical activity. How are the homeschooled students lacking in fine arts?

Fundy parents are rather scary. Then again, evolution is still only a theory - it is NOT scientific fact. What kind of scientific fact are these people rejecting?

How do you know that God didn’t create the earth 11,000 years ago? (I haven’t done a lot of research into the topic - this is an honest question.)
It doesn’t happen through one’s will. It happened because GOD willed it to happen, not our own efforts.
I’m not sure what you mean by that…could you elaborate?

Deacon, sorry but the Bible says for each day of creation there was “morning and evening”. If “yom” could have been decades then the earth would have been scorched in a decade long day. Strange, “thus saith the Lord”, I believe Him. You can choose to twist the Scriptures but you do it to your own destruction.

How did we have “morning and evening” for the first three days if the sun wasn’t created until day 4 (vv. 14-16)?

Surely the author of Genesis knew that “day” and “night” and “morning” and “evening” refer to the relative orientation of a planet to the sun…
